Analysis: Establishing Who Was To Blame For Both Goals Yesterday

By The Boy -

GOAL ONE

The first goal and a West Ham player has spotted a pathway big enough to hit an inswinging ball in with his left foot. With nobody on the pitch, the ball is on target for goal. It’s a great ball to play.

Sanchez is not only out of position, he’s also in a state of suspended animation. The other problem is that by the time the ball’s gone over him, we then encounter Dier, who for not the first time, fails to read the ball and in slow motion watches it curling toward him when he really ought to have been all over the West Ham player behind him.

Antonio connects with the ball, Lloris shins it, and then at the second time of asking, the ball is in the net. Dier has stopped dead in his tracks and then proceeds to try to put it on Tanganga, who, I might remind you, is where Sanchez ought to be.

GOAL 2

As the West Ham move begins, it’s Dier and Reguilon that are the last men.

As Dier is getting turned inside out, Sanchez makes a half-hearted challenge, and instead of putting his foot down and getting a shoe-in, we get a bit of a shoulder nudge. Pathetic stuff.

Lingard more than gets past Dier, Dier is a bamboozled irrelevance at this stage and the ball is in the net.

CONCLUSION

In both instances, Dier and Sanchez are mentally and physically very slow to respond to what are not impossible circumstances. What exactly is Ledley King adding to the coaching?

Are you saying that one of the most decorated managers in football history can’t see what you can see? Or do you think he might be continuously playing them in central defence to make a point?

What’s he up to Jim?

There are no words that can adequately describe how poor Sanchez and Dier are at defending. One four letter word that starts with S and ends in T doesn’t do justification to how much worse than that they are.

Somebody on another blog described a lot of Spurs players lacking any physical grace, the ability to be nimble and light on their feet.

He described them as being clumsy oafs and it’s hard to disagree.

Our problem is primarily defensive.Dier, Davies, Sanchez , Docherty and Aurier are and never will be good enough. We desperately needed a quality CB in the summer but once again Poundland Levy thought he could get away with cutting corners. If you look at the reasons why we appear so slow and sluggish at the start of most matches look no further than this collection of dross. By the time they have finished passing sideways and backwards the opposition have got men behind the ball and they generally lose us possession by passing direct to the opposition. Then they all appear capable of conceding soft goals, free kicks or penalties.Kane and Son must look on despairingly as they see their goals unravelled by these donkeys. No wonder Kane is probably looking at options and Son is none to keen to sign a new deal. Jose is no mug he knew the quality of what he was taking on and he knew Levy’s reputation. I guess £15 million a year and a three year deal with no break clause was to good to turn down.

He’s right actually, that’s how they analysed it on MOTD.But leading up to Bowen crossing the bsll PEH had lost the ball in a challenge and was very slow attempting to get back.

Who is the next manager gonna play – Rodon and Sanchez? Toby every other game?

Toby and Dier are our best pairing IMO, but both lacking form. The need for a top quality first team challenger is clear. That person is not ~Sanchez, and Rodon is a year away.

I don’t know how Sanchez is still getting a game. He is responsible for more of these “individual errors” rthan the rest of them combined!

It’s bleak stuff, it really is. Sanchez has been an issue for months, yet Jose is still picking him ahead of Rodon. If Jose is right for not picking Bale and Dele, then he must be right to pick Sanchez, no? Jose sees what goes on on the training ground every day. We can’t trust him with one thing and not on another can we? It is hard to imagine that having watched Sanchez’s deterioration that Jose values him more than Rodon. I think one thing is certain, Jose wanted Skriniar but Levy wasn’t willing to pay. So in answer to the blog’s question, I’m blaming Levy but sticking with Sanchez is doing Jose no favours.

Jose has had plenty of time to improve these players, the ones who were bad under Poch too. I think it is obvious Jose is not that sort of manager, but we knew that. He is a manager who needs big funds and he can win trophies with top players, which we do not have in abundance. How do you coach Doherty to cross a ball, he’s not 13 years old! At the moment this is a job Jose should not have taken, but he wasn’t going to turn down £15m a year was he? I have read that Klopp took a few years to get Liverpool sorted, but he was given sufficient funds (dried up now though). Pep wouldn’t make us better, neither would Klopp, Clough or Bill Shankly.

Would sacking the manager stop Diers mistakes? someone once asked sarcastically. Can’t see any other manager giving him a game TBH so yes is the answer

Not Ledley’s fault apparently – This from THFC: Ledley King was appointed First Team Assistant in August, 2020. He works alongside our coaches, analysts and playing squad both at the Training Centre and on matchdays.
Perhaps he’s on a YTS Contract – not allowed to coach, just there to learn. He does look at little like the odd one out – Jose appeasing Levy / the fans.

The clamour for Rodon is based on pretty much nothing. He’s as gaffe prone as Sanchez minus all the experience.
Tanganga and Toby are the best two CB’s although I don’t know how they go as a pairing.

Same with Lloris. I sense he doesn’t want to come out for crosses in case he hurts someone. Is big Pat still playing?

Terrible lack of interest from Son as well he should have closed him down he had all the time in the world to deliver an excellent cross in.

He had a stinker.

Its a shame as ledley was and still is one of spurs greats, but that does not make him a great coach, and clearly he is not making a difference so should be replaced, although i do have some sympathy as you cant make a silk purse out of a sows ear!!

On the first goal your wrong. If you run it back 2 seconds you see that Moura lets his man run off him. Dier has to then cover that man leaving the gap behind. On that one its Mouras fault.

‘What exactly is Ledley King adding to the coaching?’

I hope that Maureen isn’t picking the teams defence based on King’s recommendations. The analysis of the goals due to defending is shocking. It gives the rest of the team no confidence. Why bother? It’s a glaring problem. Teams are now praying for the Dier / Sanchez axis. If he plays em again together then expect more of the same.

Frankly its ridiculous that Rodon is not playing regularly, better than dier and sanchez. Also not sure why people are not mentioning doherty- is there a worse rb in the PL? Cant cross the ball despite having acres of room on many occasions. I thought he was an upgrade on aurier but despite him not being a world beater, i prefer aurier. Not sure how long moaninho can last, hes going to be sacked for sure, just a matter of time.

You have to question his team selections, and more so the style of play.

It’s a mess, the CB’s are not good enough apart from Toby who is not the force he was it seems, and Rodon who surely deserves to cement his place in the side from now on.
Ledley’s contribution does have to be questioned, as we are so badly out of sync in the centre of defence, with the same players at fault.

Questioned all season as to what King does/offers. The answer is very obvious now , NOTHING. Afraid Al Murray and Lionel Richie are beyond useless but who are we to moan. We apparently have the self confessed best coach in the world in charge so there you have it. PS is Rodon still at the club ??

I just don’t understand the logical rationale behind Rodon’s omission. Here is good pedigree muscular no nonsense defender we bought from Swansea, played well against Sheff Utd but has since disappeared. Don’t get it!!

“what would you do”
I would have one of them on the bench.
Jose put Rodon in against bigger teams so why not West Ham was he making some point to Levy or have they both looked ace in training.

I kept on saying drop Dier and Sanchez for good it can’t be worse and Jose has to have 11 1st team starters for every Pl game from now on unless he does that we will be in downward slop he hast to sort out the defence you can not win games by having a mess in the back we have good attackers in front but it is useless until they have a reliable defenders how the most successful manager in the world can’t see that it is mind boggling.

Constantly baffled by Mourinho’s team selections IMO currently our best 2 centre backs oddly discarded against West Ham are TOBY and RODON who should be playing each and every fixture!

The infamous trifecta of Dier-Sanchez-Lloris (who was, in my view, at least partly culpable for the first goal – a more dominant keeper would have gone out to claim the cross), plus an unfit Reguilon was always going to be a recipe for disaster. It speaks volumes when Tanganga is the one I trust the most out of the starters.

If the backline is doing well overall, we might carry one of the “Three Defensively Poor Amigos” but not all of them at once. However, Toby can’t play all the time, Rodon is young and being eased in (and probably feels more comfortable in a back 3), and our remaining options are Davies, Aurier and Doherty.

Oof.

Dier, has had a huge opportunity handed to him by Jose and he has failed to hit the required standard

He had been given more than enough chances by Spurs and although I like the lad he has been at fault for literally millions of goals this season

Upgrade needed.

Look I’ve been saying this over and over dier is not good enough nor is sanchez. Both need to go in the summer window. We need two centre half’s one has to be a left footed centre half. People say why Jose play such dull system well folks with a defence of dier sanchez and maybe Davies and aurier what would you do.
