Tottenham may look to continue bolstering their squad in the January transfer window.
Ange Postecoglou is reportedly prioritising the addition of a creative midfielder to bolster the team’s options in the centre of the park.
Despite an active summer that saw the arrival of four signings and the imminent addition of South Korean winger Min-hyuk Yang in January, Spurs still see room for improvement in the squad.
Postecoglou appears keen to inject more creativity into the midfield to complement his existing lineup.
Gold says Ange Postecoglou wants a new creative midfielder
Journalist Alasdair Gold has indicated that Postecoglou is eager to strengthen this area but suggests that any move during the winter window would depend on identifying the ideal candidate—someone capable of immediately fitting into the squad while offering versatility across multiple midfield roles.
Tottenham currently boasts a strong midfield core, including standout contributors like James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, as well as young talents such as Pape Matar Sarr, Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall.
While this group has been solid, a more creative presence could be key to unlocking stubborn defences and improving the team’s offensive capabilities.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Gold said:
“James Maddison, Kulusevski, Bergvall and Sarr flesh out the rest of the midfielder options.
“I’m sure Postecoglou would love to have another creative midfielder, I’m sure he would love to have it, but it would have to be someone perfect for that role or a versatile player who can play various roles. Otherwise I would imagine that’s more of a position for the summer.”
Tottenham linked with Angel Gomes
One player linked to Spurs is Angel Gomes, the Lille midfielder who has impressed in Ligue 1 with his vision and technical skills.
A product of Manchester United’s academy, Gomes has flourished in France, earning plaudits for his creativity and recently earning his first cap for the England national team.
With Gomes in the final year of his contract, Tottenham could pursue a pre-contract agreement in January, potentially bringing him to North London on a free transfer next summer.
His versatility and ability to perform as a playmaker or in deeper midfield roles make him an ideal candidate for Postecoglou’s dynamic system.
Securing a player of Gomes’ calibre would not only address Spurs’ need for creativity but also solidify their ambitions for a strong second half of the season and future campaigns.
