Ajax fans will certainly hope for instant magic from Bergwijn – opinion

By Saikat -

Former Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn has completed a club-record move to Ajax.

The Dutch outfit have shelled out a fee of around £26 million for his services and it is the highest transfer fee any Eredivisie club has ever paid for any player as per the BBC.

The 24-year-old will be hoping to resurrect his career with regular game time in the Netherlands now. He started just four games in the league last term and a player of his caliber will be expected to play more matches.

Bergwijn joined Tottenham back in January 2020, and he was expected to develop into a key player for the London club. However, he struggled to hold on to a regular starting berth in the Premier League, and he needed to leave the London giants in order to play more often.

The 24-year-old announced his arrival in the Premier League with an outstanding goal against Manchester City on his debut and the fans were naturally excited about his time at the club.

However, the winger leaves after scoring just eight goals in 83 appearances for the Premier League side over the last two years, and it is fair to conclude that his time at Spurs has not been a roaring success.

The transfer to Ajax should be ideal for all parties. With the World Cup coming up, the player needs to play more often in order to cement his place in the national team squad, and Tottenham could use the proceeds from the sale to strengthen their squad before the transfer window ends.

The 24-year-old has now shared a message for the Tottenham fans following his move to Ajax.

“Dear Spurs fans, thank you for all the great moments and memories,” Bergwijn said on Instagram. It was an honour to have been part of this beautiful club.”

Bergwijn has played in the Eredivisie before with PSV Eindhoven, and it is fair to assume that he could hit the ground running. The Ajax fans will certainly hope for instant magic from their club-record purchase.
