A heart-warning pledge, but perhaps we should wait to hear from the Tottenham player himself?

Italian transfer journalist Gianluca Di Marzio believes Dejan Kulusevski will stay at Tottenham next season, even if Spurs get relegated to the Championship. He told a Swedish outlet that the Swede has “the right mentality” and could be a key player in manager Roberto De Zerbi’s project, regardless of the division. Di Marzio noted that De Zerbi likes him and sees him as a good example for the squad.

Tottenham are in serious relegation trouble in the 2025/26 Premier League season. As of mid-April 2026, they sit near the bottom of the table (around 17th-18th place with roughly six games left), fighting to avoid the drop.

Kulusevski has not played a single minute this season. He suffered a serious right knee (patella) injury in May 2025 against Crystal Palace and has been sidelined for nearly a full year. He underwent initial surgery and a follow-up minor procedure (arthroscopy) in March 2026 to clean up the knee. He recently reassured fans that his “knee is great now” after the latest intervention, but there’s still no firm return date—likely pointing toward a summer 2026 comeback.

It’s a big show of faith in a player who hasn’t kicked a ball competitively in over 11 months. If he can return fit and regain his pre-injury form (he was a creative spark for Spurs before the injury), he could be a vital asset – even in the Championship – where his quality would stand out. Relegation would be a massive blow for a club of Tottenham’s stature, but keeping hold of established players like Kulusevski could help any immediate bounce-back attempt.

Our View

This is exactly what fans want to hear, but the player didn’t actually say it. This summer feels destined to be full of the same half-truths as we’ve been hearing along the way, as Spurs descended in the opposite direction.
