Steven Bergwijn hints at a possible departure from Tottenham in search of more playing time

Over the last couple of weeks, reports have been linking Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn to a move out of north London. The 24-year-old has struggled in his tenure with Spurs, and following this international break, he hinted at a possible departure.

Bergwijn scored three goals in two friendly fixtures for the Netherlands and with the FIFA World Cup on the horizon, the forward understands that playing time is needed and at Spurs, he’s not getting that currently.

“I don’t get to play much at the club. I am happy that the national coach has called me up; that’s not obvious (thing to do),” Bergwijn said to Algemeen Dagblad (via Sports Witness). “You don’t forget about football. But of course, you feel that you don’t play that much. It was nice to be here again. We have a good and fun group.”

“I wouldn’t know (whether form for the Netherlands can improve situation at club), we’ll see. Everyone wants to play of course. I have to keep my head up and work hard in training. Then we’ll see what happens in the summer.”

This season, Bergwijn has appeared in 18 Premier League fixtures, starting only four games and tallying a total of 497 total minutes with an average of 28 minutes per game.

Bergwijn is under contract until 2025, but with players like Dele Alli, Giovani Lo Celse, and Tanguy Ndombele already exiting, it may come as no surprise if the Dutch forward departs this summer.

Furthermore, with these performances, there will be a market for him as clubs look to get that potential he’s showing with the Netherland’s national team this past international window.

As BT says, just not good enough. Has the potential to hone himself into a decent player, but we don’t have time for ‘potential’. We have too may ‘potentials ‘ in the squad. ‘Potential’ wins nothing. Only actual performances win stuff, and apart from a few displays where he’s scored a few goals but otherwise been bang average or below in those games and the rest, I’ve not seen anything from Steven that shows me he’s got anything remotely close to getting into a Champions League team in a month of Sundays.

Not good enough to start for Spurs, but should make it at another club in the PL. He’s not a bad player. Maybe Newcastle so we can get a decent fee

Poor old Stevie I just cant get that miss at Bindip FC out of my head.

From memory (help me out here) his best spell was under Mourinho where he was covering the right side defensively with his speed and it worked but then he got injured?

At least we will get some spend for him which is good unlike Eeyore or No Sho (for Tottenham).

Can he defend though? It’s all well and good to say Traore or Bergwijn to be changed into a RWB and I agree both have electric pace and good attacking ability (unlike Royal who would be better as a right sided CB or sold tbh), but can these players adapt to play defensive?
Don’t forget when Conte adapted Moses to WB at Chelsea he had an attacking team that dominated play. That won’t be the case at Spurs as there will be significant amounts of defending to do.
I’d like to see Bergwijn be a success at Spurs, but the longer time goes on without that happening the more worrying it becomes.

Just felt that buying Traore , when we have a very similar player with electric pace , is senseless .
I’m sure Steve would accept and adapt if he was given opportunity…….. Would be a shame to lose him , a potential star for us and a player every squad should have .

And yet he has been scoring goals from central positions for Holland ..So Spurs square pegs round holes ..I wish him well if he goes .

Maybe if he had raised his game to his national level when playing for Spurs he wouldn’t be left out. His finishing in front of goal has been poor and he hasn’t settled into our league. He won’t be the first or last to struggle to adapt to the physicality and high pace of the PL. No more punts Levy bring us players who are of a higher level and don’t have to develop. “Develop” in Levy language means he can get a miserly discount which is what he lives for. Hence no trophies.

Bergwin has failed to bring his Dutch form to the Prem – as yet .
I believe there have been moments when he has shown the class [ he undoubtedly has that ] albeit with a largely unhappy endings , he tends to look ‘too excited ‘ and overplays , but he has speed , his eye for goal is good and -if Spurs are to be a ‘top team’ – he cannot be allowed to leave unless we have similar to replace with .
I think he could be a formidable right wing back , especially when you are told that Traore , almost a twin of Bergwin in his style , could be “coached “to do that role . Why has it not been considered that Stevie could play that role , Ithink he could do it , and it would give him the game time he craves ??????
I feel that he has plenty to bring to the squad , I for one would miss him And his game changing possibilities
