Colombia Beat Venezuela 3:0 Yet Davinson Sanchez Still Didn’t Have A Good Game

When Davinson Sanchez joined Tottenham, my view was that this was a natural successor to Ledley King. The Brazilian Colombian read the ball well, was fast on his feet, and generally looked like a decent purchase. However, the South American has somewhat deteriorated into just another ‘decent enough‘ player, that may lack the concentration levels required to be a top class player.

On the 10th, Sanchez featured for Colombia as they beat Venezuela by three goals to nil, in a World Cup qualifier, but despite a convincing win, Sanchez didn’t impress.

Long passing accuracy 33% Sanchez made 6 long balls, and only 2 of them went where they were supposed to.

7 times the Colombian lost possession, and 5 of those occasions were in his own half. Defensive duels? Sanchez won just 1 out of 4 attempts.

Who knows how José Mourinho views the boy, but for £40million one would expect more, or at least sense some gradual improvement. My concern is that we have a player on our books that isn’t progressing.

I always thought we got the wrong CB.We should have signed Yerry Mina and he was 25% cheaper.

I’m not too concerned about this thinking about it. Okay we all like to panic about our defence but how many goals have they actually conceded from open play this season so far? The answer is significantly less than the big 3.
As long as Davinson does the business for us I’m not too concerned what he does for Columbia. He’s probably surrounded by a bunch of numpties anyway.

Oh for a peak Vertonghen/Alderwiereld combo I know Tapper will call it “Old Lane” but it was bleeding good.

We’ll just have to outscore the opposition won’t we? Shouldn’t be too difficult with a front 3 of Son, Kane and Bale.

Regrettably H, not that I have seen the Colombia game in question, the underwhelming CB tandem of Sanchez and Dier, plus the declining powers of the once supreme Toby, represent the Achilles heel of what is otherwise now an outstanding squad.

Neither Sanchez (nor Dier) have improved as players, in fact I would concur that they have both regressed, since their earlier promising campaigns in our colours. Whether Ledley’s influence can improve their positional awareness and defensive skills at this juncture is a moot point.

What is not up for debate however is an analysis of every single goal we have conceded this season. Aside from two absurd penalties given against Doherty, Reg losing possession against Chelsea and a ‘worldie’ against Skendija, every other goal conceded has stemmed from mistakes by the hapless Sanchez/Dier combination.

Dier not marking Calvert-Lewin properly against Everton, ditto with Ings against Southampton, the ‘penalty’ against the Barcodes, Sanchez’s clumsy challenge on Martial versus United. his awful clearance against Maccabi Haifa, Sanchez again losing his man for the Plovdiv goal from a corner.

In summary, out of the 7 goals we have conceded in all competitions, that have been attributable to defensive errors, (not including the two joke penalties against Doherty and the ‘worldie’), Sanchez and Dier have been responsible for 6 of them. Failing to buy Skriniar may yet prove very damaging in an otherwise stellar transfer window.

Davinson Sanchez – makes John Stones look like Sergio Ramos. Silly boy, that white stuff lying around the dressing room wasn’t sherbet.

Yeah, easy mistake, it feels like we got ripped off.

Hugely agree with the last sentence and concern.

I live in Amsterdam and still speak with Ajax fans who want him back, that is how highly they rated him here, they think we got a good deal at 40ish million, despite the huge profit that netted them on a player they had for 12 months.

Hopefully Jose can kick the errors in his game into touch – not unlike most of Sanchez’ long balls in the above clip
