“Brilliant business ” pundit reacts to Tottenham’s latest transfer coup

Darren Bent has been left amazed by Tottenham’s brilliant business after they signed Matt Doherty from Wolves for around £15 million.

The Republic of Ireland international has just joined Spurs on a four-year deal.

He has been one of the best full-backs in the country since he gained promotion back to the English top-flight with Wolves in 2018.

He is the highest-scoring defender in England in the past two seasons with 15 goals and a player that should normally cost much more.

But Daniel Levy has been able to negotiate what might turn out to be the deal of the summer.

Bent has been surprised at the small amount that Spurs have paid for him and the former striker claims that Doherty should be costing a fortune like the likes of Kyle Walker and Aaron Wan-Bissaka because of his qualities and his experience playing in Europe.

Bent told Football Insider: “Absolute bargain – the going rate for a right-back at the minute seems to be £50million. Kyle Walker was £50million, Chillwell’s gone for £50million, Wan Bissaka was around £50million so it seems to be the going rate. 

“For a full-back of that quality, if you can bring him in on that money, for £16million, that’s an absolute bargain – he knows the Premier League, he’s played in Europe before. Brilliant business.”
