Is This £25M Rated Roma Man Really The Solution To Spurs’ Defensive Woes?

Tottenham are reportedly among a number of Premier League sides with an interest in Man Utd loanee Chris Smalling.

The 30-year-old has impressed during his loan spell with Roma this season, having seemingly been forced to leave Old Trafford last summer to secure a more prominent role.

Smalling has made 28 appearances so far this season for the Italian giants, with his form helping them to continue to compete for a Champions League qualification spot.

However, as noted by the Metro, via La Gazzetta dello Sport, it’s suggested that if Roma fail to secure a place at Europe’s top table next season, that could open the door for other clubs to swoop for the England international.

Tottenham, Arsenal and Everton are all specifically mentioned as possible alternative options for Smalling, although it’s noted by the Metro that United will want around £25m to green light an exit.

Spurs have conceded 40 goals in 29 league games thus far, giving them the joint-worst defensive record out of the top 10 sides in the standings.

In turn, a swoop for Smalling this summer could make sense to help shore up their backline, while Jan Vertonghen could yet leave as his current contract is set to expire.

That would leave a void behind which will need to be filled, and so Jose Mourinho could consider a reunion with Smalling as a solution.
