Levy Likely To Hang On To Harry Kane But Only Until The Summer Of 2021 [opinion]

The Evening Standard‘s football correspondent in Manchester, James Robson, believes that Manchester United are making plans to strike a transfer deal for Harry Kane this summer.

It was predictable enough that the Kane to… stories would begin rolling out this spring. The 26-year-old is set to return from injury, probably have a decent enough 2020 Euros, whilst all the while asking himself what sort of future does he really have at Tottenham.

It’s all well and good being a talisman for your side, but when your side is a dysfunctional let down, your totemic position somewhat loses its gilt edging. See Mark Noble at West Ham for further details.

For all the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth from those that believe José Mourinho is to blame for our current malaise, it is likely that Kane will adopt a more pragmatic approach.

Time is rarely on anyone’s side, and when he’s celebrating his 27th birthday this summer, Kane will be all too aware that he’s still won nothing and in truth, not even come close to winning anything. Making the Champions League final was a box ticked, but it was heavily debated afterwards if Pochettino ought to have even selected the England captain. Harry didn’t look fit, saw very little of the ball and left some feeling as if Lucas Moura might have been a better choice.

Spurs under Mourinho have a tonne of work to do before they are fit to challenge for even the most modest of silverwear. Yet only yesterday the THST reported that Levy would need to trim any transfer budget for this summer, subject to any impending lack of Champions League football.

Maybe Kane can turbo charge Tottenham Hotspur upon his return. More likely, he will begin to mount a case for his departure in the summer of 2021. After all, every other great player we’ve had has done so.

Funny innit. A couple of seasons ago, not even with a home ground we beat Real Madrid. No we are trying to work out how to negotiate Red Bull facking Leipzig!?

People have short memories, we’ve gone to $hit…

Hoping Jose’s considerable experience in European ties will squeeze us through against this lot. I expect us to have a real go at it, whatever the outcome. Otherwise Jose’s got nuffink…

I’d agree with you Steve but the budget under ENIC will never provide Jose with what he needs to even at least have a decent try at it. Plus, in my opinion the game has moved on and he’s had his day.

That’s before you even start talking about how terrible the football is!

Sadly, Levy is fully on board with Jose because he’s ignorant of the evidence before him. It will get a lot worse before it gets better and before Jose is replaced…

The thought of no kane and wilder or eddie howe managing instead of maureen seems like going back ten years and starting from the drawing board all over again. We would be a mid table team again fighting to try and get into europa.. Now maureens here he has to be given time… I dont like his footballing style, but hes our gaffer now I’m behind him… It’s levys scouting, transfers, negotiations, and general mistreatment of managers and players for many years that is the real problem here.. A fish rots from the head down as Gordon Ramsey would say

😆 Paulo di canio has ripped tin tin. Not good enough for inter. He can’t tackle, he’s too slow for italian league, it was ok to lose the ball at spurs as he had players there who would run for him 🤣.. I thought his running about was ok, it was everything else i had an issue with, fighting, passing, tackling, dead balls, shooting.

Do you think announcing a reduced transfer budget if no CL is the first hand of a poker game between Levy and Jose re his settlement package?

Agree with your summary re cash is king but I believe Kane would go to Madrid for less. The reality is however that Madrid do pay well anyway.

The problem for me is that Jose will get rid of any young talent before he gets the sack(this is based on his past history of doing so, Tappa). Sessegnon,Amos, Clarke, Tanguy and then Kane and Son who will want to go for football reasons.
We won’t be making you comfortable for a wee while yet, Easty.

The threat of a limited transfer budget by Levy if no CL next year will realistically mean no CL in the foreseeable future. The first approach will be flogging off talent to the highest bidders and stocking up with 30 yo “proven” physically robust players to grind out wins Mourinho style.
That way Daniel can still make money and Jose can promise some silverware.

I would think that Harry insisted on playing that game, he pushes himself too much at times. Poch would have known that Moura was not up to playing as a striker v Liverpool and went with Harry. Levy effectively made that choice, the same one Jose has now. He goes with Moura but how productive has that been? No reflection on Moura’s efforts but he is never going to be a long ball target and his general awareness and build up play is surprisingly poor.

I’d be more than happy for him to prove me wrong. The truth is he needs one key ingredient to stand any chance at all, a big transfer budget. He’s not going to get that from Levy so let’s just move on, it’ll be easier all round.

Besides, the football is horrid…

East Stand

Jose is a complete dead end, it’s a road to nowhere. It was before he even turned up.

Unfortunately (if that’s your view) Jose may well get the summer and a fair chunk of next season before Levy pulls the trigger on the manager (for about the 14th time or whatever it is!).

We will probably have to go through a whole process before any admission from Levy that it’s not working with Jose. This means next season is also going to be facked. He won’t be properly backed, you can put your house on it.

I agree, get rid of him now before an already partly toxic squad gets any more toxic.

To be honest, it would just be a relief to see these players play in a way that sits comfortably with the majority of Spurs fans. If we are going to be mid table, let’s at least do it in style! 😂

I think the conclusion we can draw from all of this is that the owners are not fit for purpose.

Poch was a complete stroke of luck for Levy, the top four places, the final appearance and doing all that with the 17th net spend.

None of it was planned at all, the overachieving under Poch was actually quite staggering…

Selling the only consistent true world class player we got is a no go for me. He’s the best we got and one of the worlds best strikers. kane is the only thing great about spurs at the minute. Look at how we’re doing without him right now. Schooled by sheffield, wolves, norwich… Madness to consider selling kane (unless he wants to go of course) we should be building our team around him… Levy is probably already prepared for this scenario it would be like bale all over again. He would sell kane for a bomb and buy 7 misfits, half a team where maybe 1 or 2 might be good enough…. Any owner with sense would be looking to buy more great players to compliment him, build a great team and win stuff.. He’s the best english striker ever, selling him and trusting levy to build a team with the money makes me want to weep. Our club record signings been with us months and he still can’t manage 90 mins. Alarm bells are ringing with our scouts and transfer system.

He’ll join Poch at Utd, play great football along with Fernandes who Poch wanted. LoCelso will go there in 2023 and win the league with Harry and Poch.

Utd will win with people from Spurs that Levy didn’t have the nuts to keep.

Most clubs with the desire and in a position to win silverware would likely pay more for some of our players than they are getting currently and that definitely includes Harry.

If we fall out of the CL then we need to scale up the budget to bring in better quality to get ourselves back into the CL. We have been consistently in the CL for the past four seasons and the budget has never been scaled up so why should it be scaled down if we are not in it. More snake oil spin from Golam.

If Levy said the transfer budget was ringfenced that tells me that CL football or not next season the money is still available for players. What he must mean is his cut might be slightly less.
I fully expect Kane to want to leave at the end of the season. If he didn’t I would question his ambition.

While yes money is up there so is bragging rights and players and x players love to brag about success. If you can leave and get more money and silverware in walkers case then it must play a part. Like I say if we fall like a stone to tenth or lower this season then who will want to stay. Funny thing is as Leicester have proved with the right mind set and players not having CL and europa cup to worry about can work in your favour.

Kane wont stay by choice, had the contract renewal been now rather than last year, it woulndt be signed. But I also cant see him going on strike. So I think you maybe right.

As for Jose not being to blame. I agree, but he is also not the fix. We are without doubt a worse side now than even at the worst points under Poch, players dont want to play for him and the style of football is arguably the worst in the league. Jose may need a summer to turn it around…but that will inolve Levy dipping into his pockets, and if he is willing now, why couldnthe have done it for Poch on those very numerous occasions.

John Smith

Same old same old really.
Poch tried to tell Levy the way forward but he didn’t listen & it’sthe same with Jose. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss (i.e. his hands are tied).
Levy won’t ever have a massive wage bill, despite the income. He must have cried when he realised he’d need to pay people £200,000 per week, plus extras.

However, think of this:
If we sold Harry, how would that affect the overall team? It would remove the ‘I’m not joining them because once he’s back fit, I’ll be on the bench’ thought.
Not saying it’s right, just saying we might have more chance of recruiting people. Young, keen people.
If Harry went. we’d then lose others – Ali, Son, Moura but a revamp of the team is no bad thing as the current crop aren’t doing it. We can’t say we don’t want to sell players & the next minute criticise them.
My opinion is that there’s something wrong somewhere but it isn’t clear where. The players don’t seem to be able to play the way Jose wants them to so he won’t be worried about bringing in his type of players (Chelsea, Utd & Gooner rejects) but we need to look at it from another angle.
Jose was brought in to win a trophy. No other reason – he’s won something at every other club he’s been to & we’re desperate. To do this, he need to bring in some un-Tottenham like players. Fellani for example. Jose says we’re too nice – he wants us to be spiteful, antagonistic & unpopular. Wimbledon of the 21 century. He wants us moaning like Utd did under Fergie.

In reality, it’s all about profit off the pitch. If we don’t get the CL next season, who’s to blame? Poch? Levy? Jose? The blame is firmly at Levy’s door. He’s the puppeteer pulling the strings. If we get CL qualification this
season, it’ll be a miracle.

Leslie Crawford
Leslie Crawford

I never did buy all the crap about players wanting to win things and using this as an excuse to jump ship, how many would take a fifty percent decrease in wages to fulfil their dreams. Its all about the money, would Walker and Sterling have joined City for less wages? How many of our side would like to join Liverpool for half their salary if they thought they would win medals and trophies.Yes players do want to win but CASH is still King.

Spursnut d
Spursnut d

To be honest I could see the big five all leaving or looking to leave come the summer for different reasons. Kane, dele, son, lamela and moura. Add to that vertonghen and vorm and Levy will get his trim. Wonder how much Levy would give to Jose of that roughly £350 million from them to spend. The way things are going I could see us finish the season as low as tenth.

Marbella Spur
Marbella Spur

I cannot see him staying beyond the end of this season. If Levy is already talking about trimming the transfer budget if we don’t qualify for the CL next season, what sort of signal does that send to ambitious players? As you wrote, all our best players inevitably leave as if you want to win honours as most professionals want to do, you don’t stay at Spurs. Sad but true. Never mind, we have the best training facilities and the best stadium in the world. I wonder what the odds are for Kane and Mourinho both to leave at the end of the season?
