Tottenham made an approach for Everton defender Michael Keane before Toby Alderweireld signed a new contract, according to Football Insider.
After 18 months of unsuccessful negotiations, Alderweireld and the club came to an agreement on an improved long-term deal in December of last year, prior to which the hunt for his replacement was well underway.

Spurs sources reportedly told Football Insider that 27-year-old Keane was closely tracked throughout 2019 but Everton knocked back our enquiries.
The England international has lost his place in the Everton team in recent months, which isn’t a glowing reference for his suitability in shoring up a back line which has the fewest clean sheets in the 2019-20 Premier League.
With Jan Vertonghen poised to leave on free transfer and Juan Foyth out of the picture under Jose Mourinho, the search for a centre-back will surely resume in the summer. I hope the scouting file on Keane is closed.
