7 Seasons In And We’ve Got Eric Dier Glossing Over His Catastrophic Errors – opinion

By The Boy -

Eric Dier officially has more front than Southend. In this recent interview with the Guardian’s David Hytner, the Spurs defender who has been with us since 2014 believes that his disastrous errors are part of a wider team issue.

Dier’s blunder against West Ham was merely the latest and what was particularly galling was the Englishman’s attempt to make out like it was all Tanganga Ndombele’s fault.

Regular readers will be unsurprised to hear that I take a view of this nonsense down to Eric having been on our books for too long. There is a complacency lurking beneath any footballer who has been with a club for too long, which may in part explain how few old-timers that exist in the modern age. The battle to keep focused and to maintain concentration levels doesn’t become easier if you stay in one place.

This interview really reinforces just how deep the malaise runs at Hotspur Way, when a player who has been on the books for 7 seasons is reduced to reassuring fans that the latest flatlining isn’t his fault. I think we’ve heard enough.

Maureen has been giving Sanchez the same amount of games. Rotating too much. We need Toby as first choice in all the big games… 32 isn’t old.. Sheringham was 37 and managed 80 appearences for us in all comps in 2003.

Out of those 50 odd, majority were fringe players too.. Our scouting has been a shambles since Paul Mitch left.

The reality is he’s been 💩… No excuses or perceptions come in to play…. Our eyes are not blind Eric.. I was a fan of him 7 years ago, he hasn’t evolved like I hoped.. Gone backwards even.

It was Maureen who said he was suffering with confidence… So Eric, if it’s not confidence, then what is it? 😂

Yep. All of them got complacent for a bit, looked around and found that everyone had overtaken them…

Agreed. He’s up there with Jesse Lingard and Dele. They thought they were the best around and forgot to look over their shoulders.

Eric Dier not admitting to his mistakes is like listen to Matt Hancock telling the world he’s done a good job re: Covid 19.

Throws something at the TV instant regret 🤷🏻‍♂️

Jose won’t play Rodon or Tanganga regularly DD. He has never done this with younger players. Which is why I don’t even see Levy regarding Jose as a long term fixture.

Amazon first, 2m bonus for top 4, maybe win the Mickey Mouse and back to singing under 23s…

Very true. That’s why he gave Poch no players once we were in the top four. Job done, put the chequebook away innit…

Don’t tell Levy, you can pick up footballers over 50 for next to nothing!! 😂

I’m honestly surprised at how far backwards he’s gone. His career Is beginning mirror that of Tom Huddleston, even more each day. It’s a shame…

Jose has always liked Dier, rumours of wanting to take him to Utd a few years ago., English but fluent in Portuguese having partly grown up in Lisbon. He oversaw a new contract for him as well.

Jose has put faith in a player that had lost his way some time ago, not entirely his fault but this renewed in the player may have backfired.

He was stale but now favoured for no particular footballing reason, not a good combination…

I didn’t know Hitchen knew over 50 footballers! Then again, with what he’s brought in, trades description might be having a word!

How bad must he be doing in training to allow Jose to keep picking Dier or Sanchez!

Is Mourinho playing Levy? If we’d got top 4 with this shower, and it wasn’t out of the realms of possibility, Levy would have thought everything was great and no need for 3 £50+ players.

So why does Jose still persist with this error prone defender? Ditto Sanchez. Odd considering that the best pairing are Toby and Rodon!!

Yep, the “lack of churn” is obvious, as mentioned here many a times. Spurs have spent €466m on 56 new players the last 5 seasons. 50 have departed. At first I thought it seemed like a lot, but that’s the lowest number of any team in the PL. And the Championship. Unbelievable. No wonder why players are comfortable.

To put things in perspective: MU are close, with only 59 new arrivals/60 out in the same time period. But they have spent close to 800m. Leicester have seen 74 arrivals/77 departures the last 5 seasons, spending a few mill less than Spurs. Liverpool: 90 in/85 out. Chelsea? 157 in and 142 out.
(All numbers are from Transfermarkt and includes loan deals, end of loan and returning to club, youth players promoted etc.)

Think of the carrots we’d save when he leaves. The rest of the squad can get more carrot punch in”m. Easy on the condensed milk boys

Where is Rodon??

I loved him at the start, scoring v West Spam was always going to put money in the bank. He had an arrogance about him, like he wanted to dry slap everyone around him, bit like Rice at the moment (but Rice is a better footballer). Unfortunately, he hasn’t the technical ability to cut it in midfield or the defensive ability for a defender.

It amazes me that he lasted so long with England, then got back in (Like Godfather 3 with him being dragged back). Equally amazing is Jose keeps picking him, but he has to pick someone. Trouble is they are all so poor at the moment. If you surround Dier with 4 team mates he looks decent; isolate him and he’s treading treacle.

You are spot on. Bang average early on and getting worse by the game. Has to be responsible for over 50% of goals we’ve conceded this season, strolls around with the ball at his feet thinking he’s the English Beckenbauer before launching it straight into touch ! Looks more like Hermann Minster. I read this in the Sun today snd put paper straight in the bin.

Yes , if you cannot be consistent then you cannot be good, and yes I know , that a player can be consistently Bad.

This lad seemed to convince Mourinho his best position is at CB, but the performances haven’t been good enough which the manager must surely have now realised. There are other problems in the defence but I think Dier is the main culprit alongside Sanchez who has gone backwards, and even Toby is not the force he was. There has to be changes made in the summer that will be monumentally crucial for this club in the direction it wants to go in, which includes the futures of the current manager and our best players.

As we have discussed many times recently too many players have becaome too comfortable in their longevity at the club.Along with Levy’s apparent refusal to make regular upgrades in the squad, the situation has been allowed to develope whereby we have a massive rebuild to undertake with no prospect of it happening.
The draw will be interesting.

Aren’t teams from the same country kept apart until a later round?

Totally agree. Dier along with the likes of winks, Davies, Alli to name a few are members of a group of players that have become ‘comfortable’ and lack the fire/ability to ever improve us.

Dier’s body language stinks. Stroppy, mouthy and from those highlighted comments, somewhat arrogant.

Dier is bang average. The player has been given multiple opportunities to impress in a wide range of positions and has failed to excel in any. He is a million miles away from being the defender every clubs needs to build their backline around.

It’s not that our players have shown they can’t play well enough this season…it’s just nearly all have shown they’re not consistent enough
