51-year-old manager “been waiting for a call” from Daniel Levy that never came claims former Spurs player

Glenn Hoddle has claimed that former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino would have been waiting for a call from Daniel Levy.

The stadium has been ringing with Pochettino’s name since the last few games with fans letting the owners know who they want to see take the vacant job.

Tottenham sacked Antonio Conte in March and have still not appointed a long-term replacement for him.

Cristian Stellini was named the interim manager following his sacking but his reign at the club only lasted a few weeks.

After a string of poor results which included a humiliating 6-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United, the interim manager was sacked and replaced by another interim manager, Ryan Mason.

They have been linked with a number of high profile managers since Conte’s sacking including the likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique.

Another manager they were heavily linked with was Mauricio Pochettino who spent a successful 5 years at the club.

He remains a fan favourite at the club for what he did with Spurs making them a force to reckon with as they consistently finished top 4 during his tenure.

He also led them into a remarkable Champions League final in 2019 which they eventually lost to Liverpool.

Despite initial reports that Daniel Levy was keen on bringing him back, it was eventually reported that Levy is not interested in hiring him and has not even considered him for the job.

And now, Glenn Hoddle has told BT Sport that he thinks Pochettino was waiting for Spurs to offer him the job.

He said:

“It looks to me like a good fit for them [Chelsea].

“I think Mauricio would’ve been waiting for the call from Tottenham, if I’m really honest, but that hasn’t come, and that’s pretty evident.

“I can see him going to Chelsea, yes. I think they wanted to give him (Potter) time, build something from the academy, and bring youngsters in.

“That’s where Poch has done that at Tottenham. It was a young group of players he moulded and got them to play like they were playing. He wants them to press.

“I think he’ll be excited about the squad that he’s taking over there, without a doubt.”

Much to fans’ disappointment, he is now really close to becoming the new manager of Chelsea, Tottenham’s London rivals.

If Todd Boehly gives him the time and resources, there is no doubt that he can work his magic at Stamford Bridge.

His appointment at Chelsea will add much pressure on Daniel Levy to get his appointment spot on, considering Pochettino was reportedly aching to return to Spurs but Levy did not give him a call.
