Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier has been linked with a move away from the club in recent weeks.
The 29-year-old’s performances were quite underwhelming last season and there have been rumours that Tottenham could look to cash in on the player.
However, journalist Sami Mokbel believes that the player wants to stay at Tottenham and fight for his place next season.
Speaking to Last Word on Spurs, Mokbel revealed that the 29-year-old is looking forward to working with the new Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou next season.
“Centre-back is an area they definitely want to strengthen, 100 per cent,” he said. “On that point actually, I would like to add there’s been a lot of talk of this summer about Eric Dier possibly leaving the club.
“My understanding of that situation is that Eric Dier actually wants to stay and he wants to fight for his place. He’s actually looking forward to working with Ange Postecoglou next season.”
Dier is versatile enough to operate as a defensive midfielder, a right-back as well as a central defender. He could be a useful squad player, especially for the cup games.
It remains to be seen whether Ange Postecoglou is prepared to keep him at the club for another season.
It is no secret that Tottenham will have to bring in defensive reinforcements. They looked quite vulnerable at the back last season and ended up conceding in excess of 60 goals in the league.
They will have to sort out their defensive problems if they want to get back into the top four and secure Champions League qualification.
Although Dier had a dismal campaign last year, he could still be a useful player for Tottenham.
Ange Postecoglou has a proven record of getting the best out of his quad and he could get Dier firing once again.
