What’s exactly the deal with Roberto De Zerbi and Tottenham?

Current Situation at Spurs and Roberto De Zerbi

Tottenham are in a desperate relegation battle in the 2025/26 Premier League season. After 31 matches, they sit around 17th place on roughly 30 points — just one point above the drop zone (with Nottingham Forest and West Ham breathing down their neck).

They’ve had a chaotic campaign:

Started with Thomas Frank as head coach (replacing Ange Postecoglou). Sacked Frank in February after poor form. Appointed Igor Tudor as interim boss until the end of the season.
Recent results have been dire, including a 3-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest and a winless start to 2026 in the league.

De Zerbi’s Stance

De Zerbi is open to the Tottenham job, but only from the summer, and only if Spurs stay in the Premier League.

Tottenham has held talks with him (and Mauricio Pochettino) as frontrunners for the permanent role next season. He has no interest in taking over immediately or mid-season to fight relegation. Reports confirm he plans to wait until the summer and won’t commit to a relegated club.

There is speculation about an interim move with a relegation escape clause, but De Zerbi has indicated he’s not rushing back into management right now, and Spurs appear hesitant.

In short: he’s a potential long-term solution if they survive, not a short-term firefighter.

The remaining ~7 league games are critical.

De Zerbi is known for attractive, possession-based football and improving squads (as he did at Brighton), but he’s not a miracle worker who parachutes in for 6-8 games and guarantees safety — especially given his own stated preferences.

Bottom line: Don’t count on De Zerbi riding in like a cavalry charge to rescue Spurs in 2025/26. The “save” has to come from the current setup (or an emergency change). If they go down, his interest likely vanishes; if they stay up, he could be the man to rebuild in the summer alongside names like Pochettino.

It’s a grim few weeks ahead for Tottenham fans.
