Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has shared his concerns about the increasingly congested football schedule.
The North London club haven’t had the best of starts to the new season. Despite playing some high-quality football, they haven’t got the desired results. But they did return to winning ways against Coventry City and Brentford and will now be looking to make it three wins in a row when they host Qarabağ in their opening Europa League fixture.
During his pre-match press conference ahead of the European fixture, Tottenham skipper Son Heung-min talked about the congested football schedule and how it is going to impact the players and the quality of the game. On the back of it, Ange Postecoglou was asked about the hectic schedule. He backed his skipper and called for the authorities to address the issue which has been raised by quite a few top stars of late.
The Australian manager said to the club’s official website: “Well, not specifically to this competition.
“I have spoken already about the fact we’re getting to a real dangerous level about what our expectations are around players.
“Players don’t get a break between seasons any more like they used to.
“So, it’s going to get to a point where we are not going to have the best players out there playing and more even worse them breaking down for various reasons. It’s definitely something that needs to be addressed.”
The former Celtic manager feels the schedule is overcrowded and that it has already reached a very dangerous level in terms of what is expected of the players. The number of games has drastically increased in recent years and the players no longer get the kind of summer breaks they once used to get.
The end-of-season breaks hardly last a few weeks before players return to prepare for the new campaign. Top clubs that compete in Europe, tend to play a game every three days and given how lengthy the schedules have become it is very difficult to have the best players out there playing in top competitions. They are at risk of picking up major injuries and Postecoglou feels the authorities concerned should try to resolve the issue.
