Morgan Rogers has given Aston Villa the lead against Tottenham after the away side exploited Guglielmo Vicario’s weakness from corners.
The Italian goalkeeper seems to struggle defending from set pieces. He conceded multiple goals from corners last season as well, with the opposition players targeting him by putting pressure on him during the set piece delivery.
And that was the case again against Villa. He made a good save initially to deny Onana’s header, resulting in the corner.
Vicario was seen pushing players away from his area as they surrounded him during the set piece.
Lucas Digne’s delivery was excellent which Pedro Porro ended up flicking towards his own goal. Vicario awkwardly parried it away but only till Rogers who taps it in from close range.

Guglielmo Vicario: Struggles from set-pieces
Last season, several sides targetted him from set-pieces, in particular from the corners. One notable incident was against Everton when Jack Harrison attempted to hinder him from reaching the ball before Dominic Calvert-Lewin nodded it in from close range.
Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood spoke about the player’s apparent ‘weakness’ last season, highlighting Vicario’s vulnerability to crosses, suggesting that opposing teams may look to exploit this weakness in future matches.
He has come under criticism for his performances this season as well. Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy recently pointed fingers at him for his slow performances early on in the season.
He claimed that his early struggles are one of the reasons to Tottenham’s slow start to the campaign.
Despite his recent struggles, Vicario remains a key part of Ange’s side. He joined Spurs last summer from Empoli and very quickly established himself as a top goalkeeper in the League.
That said, Vicario will need to regain his confidence in goal and get back to his best form to help Tottenham climb up the table and help his side to a strong season.
