Transfer insider confirms Spurs ‘interest’ in £96m rated ‘sublime’ star but deal dependent on one key factor

According to transfer insider Dean Jones, Tottenham Hotspur hold an ‘interest’ in signing Croatian international Josko Gvardiol, but the possibility of the deal happening may depend on Antonio Conte’s future at the club.

Josko Gvardiol, who is considered one of the most sought-after players in Europe, is being pursued by multiple big clubs.

According to The Mirror, Chelsea and Real Madrid are among the teams showing the most interest in signing the ‘sublime‘ defender, Chelsea previously attempted to acquire him during the summer transfer window.

The Daily Mail reports that Chelsea made a £75 million bid for the player in the summer but it arrived too late in the window for the RB Leipzig to sanction a deal.

The defender went on to sign a contract extension with the club after the window shut extending his contract till 2027.

However, according to latest reports, a summer for away from the Bundesliga club is under work.

Sky Sports Germany has revealed that Gvardiol’s new contract has a release clause around the region of £96 million. If a club pays his release clause, it would make him the most expensive defender in the world, a feat currently held by Manchester United’s Harry Maguire.

And as per the BILD, Tottenham have emerged as a surprise contender to sign the Croat but any deal would depend on their Italian manager’s future at the club.

Transfer insider Dean Jones believes the current uncertainty around Conte’s future at the club could ‘put the Croatian off’. He told GiveMeSport:

“Essentially, we need to see how this season plays out first,”

“See whether Antonio Conte stays in charge. See whether Fabio Paratici is still pulling the strings and can make something like this happen.

“It’s always been a case that Tottenham have had an interest in him.”

Regardless of whether Conte stays or goes, It will be very unlikely of Daniel Levy to splash this kind of money on the 20-year-old defender and knowing him, he would most probably go for a cheaper option available.
