Tottenham Hotspur have to decide on several matters going into the upcoming transfer window.
One being of their loan signings, Timo Werner, who Spurs signed from RB Leipzig earlier in January, with an option for a permanent transfer included in the agreement.
The Lilywhites would need to make a decision before this year’s European Championship if they intend to buy the German international permanently; otherwise, the buy option would expire.
However, according to club insider and lawyer John Wenham, Tottenham might opt not to buy Werner but instead bid him farewell at the end of the season.
Wenham believes that Spurs would contemplate allocating the funds towards another option, preferably Athletic Club’s winger Nico Williams.
Club could say goodbye to Werner
Speaking to Tottenham News, he highlighted the potential financial implications, suggesting that investing £42.8 million in Williams could signal the end of Werner’s tenure at Tottenham.
Wenham speculated that in such a scenario, the club might opt to part ways with Werner, acknowledging his contributions and wishing him success elsewhere, stating:
“If Spurs were to spend the £42.8million on Williams, that wouldn’t be good for Werner’s future at Tottenham.”
“In that situation, the club are likely to thank Werner for the season, what he has done for the team and wish him well and use the money that would go toward him to sign Williams.“
“Williams would be an outstanding signing and a real statement of intent.”
Werner has been decent, showcasing his quality in his short tenure so far, scoring 2 goals and providing 3 assists in 784 minutes of Premier League action across 12 appearances.
Although the former Chelsea forward is 28 years old, the North London outfit would prefer to invest in a younger player who could be a fitting option for the years to come.
21-year-old Nico Williams certainly fits the bill, as the left-winger possesses immense potential with his dribbling skills and pace, making him a tricky wide player.
The Spaniard has scored 6 goals and provided 14 assists in his 31 appearances across all competitions this season.
