Tottenham veteran with 330 appearances makes decision on future as contract nears end

Ben Davies wants to run down his deal at Tottenham and leave as a free agent next summer.

The Welsh international joined Spurs back in 2014 after making a name for himself while playing for Swansea. While he has been an integral part of the North London club’s first team over the years, he has gone down the pecking order since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou.

With his contract running out in less than 12 months, Ben Davies’ future at the club has been a big talking point and he has been linked with a move away from the club. But, according to a report from Football Insider, the Tottenham veteran has decided to see out the final year of his contract and leave Spurs as a free agent next summer.

The 31-year-old has featured in 330 matches for the North London club and he has even contributed towards 32 goals (9 goals, 23 assists). While he prefers playing in the heart of the defence, he is equally effective as a left-back. Last season, he was only involved in 19 matches and racked up less than 1,300 minutes. Despite not being a prominent figure last time out, Postecoglou still has no problems having him around as he could prove to be an important squad player.

While reports suggested that the player could look for a move away in search of regular first-team action, he has decided he wants to stay at Tottenham for the 2024/25 season. Spurs need to trim their squad and balance their books in a transfer window where they have already spent a significant amount. Despite that, they are leaning towards keeping the 31-year-old in their team for next season.
