Tottenham urged to sign ‘incredible’ 28-year-old who would take them to the ‘next level’

Ivan Toney in action

Alan Hutton wants Tottenham to sign Brentford ace Ivan Toney ahead of next season.

Signing a new number nine is one of the priorities for the North London club before heading into next season. They have been linked with Brighton’s Evan Ferguson and Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

While the Irish international could be a great addition to their squad in the long run, Alan Hutton wants someone who can make an immediate impact. As a result, the former Spurs defender has urged the club to push for Toney’s services.

While talking to Football Insider about who could be a better fit for the North London club, Hutton said: “It depends. When you’re looking at strikers, do you want somebody who’s ready-made and is going to come in and affect your team right now?

“You’d have to pay for that. You’d be talking about Toney and these kind of guys, that’s big money.

“Or, somebody like Evan Ferguson, he’s got the ability, he can score goals and he’s only going to get better, he’s young and hungry to learn. There’s a lot of good that comes with that, but is he going to come in, play week in, week out, and score the goals you need?

“It depends on the process and what the likes of Daniel Levy and Ange are looking for.

“If they want to go and compete, Ferguson can do it, but he’s still young, still learning and needs to improve. I think, if they got that big-hitter and big name at this moment in time, Toney would be incredible, it would really elevate them to that next level.”

Harry Kane left the club last summer to join Bayern Munich. Tottenham decided against signing a replacement, Richarlison and Son Heung-min were used in the central areas. The two players managed to do reasonably well. However, Richarlison didn’t reach the expected levels and Postecoglou prefers using Son on the left flank. As a result, he wants to sign a new number nine on a priority basis.

Ferguson has made quite a name for himself at Brighton, and he has the potential to develop into a quality player. However, Hutton suggests that the teenager won’t be able to have the kind of impact Spurs want. They want someone who can help them take the next step and the 39-year-old suggested they should look to spend big money on a proven star.

Toney seems to be an ideal fit for them as he has already proved himself in the English top flight and will hit the ground running. With his contract at Brentford running out in the summer of 2025, the Bees will most likely sanction his departure if their demands are met, as they can’t risk losing out on him for free in 12 months’ time.
