Tottenham have been urged to hold on to their experienced defender Ben Davies, despite rising transfer interest from Galatasaray.
John Wenham, club insider and the host of the famous podcast, Lilywhite Rose, has expressed his belief that selling Davies at this stage would be a mistake for the club.
Wenham emphasised the importance of Davies’ experience and versatility, especially under the leadership of manager Ange Postecoglou.
The Welsh international can operate in various defensive roles, and his potential departure could create a void that Tottenham wouldn’t be able to fill until the January transfer window.
Given Spurs’ demanding fixture list, particularly with both domestic and European commitments, Wenham believes that Davies’ reliability will be crucial.
Speaking to Tottenham News, he said:
“From Spurs’ point of view, this transfer wouldn’t be wise. Letting someone of Davies’ experience go at this point wouldn’t be the right decision. He can cover in multiple positions across the backline.”
“If Tottenham let him go now, they wouldn’t have an opportunity to replace him until January.”
His ability to step in across the backline provides the squad with needed depth, while his leadership and knowledge of the Premier League make him a valuable asset as younger players continue to develop.
Since joining Spurs from Swansea City in 2014, Davies has built a solid reputation for his consistency and contribution on both ends of the pitch. Last season, the 31-year-old defender made 19 appearances, often stepping up when injuries impacted the first-choice defenders.
As Tottenham aim to strengthen their position under Postecoglou, maintaining stability within the squad will be essential.
Davies’ wealth of experience, along with his flexibility, could play a key role in helping the team manage its packed schedule and continue to perform at a high level across all competitions.
