Tottenham Hotspur continues to be linked with a move for Marcus Edwards.
The 24-year-old has been a key player for Sporting CP since joining the club and they are prepared to reward him with a bumper new contract. The winger has a release clause of €60 million in his contract right now and the new deal would see the release clause increase to €80 million.
According to a report from the Portuguese publication Record (h/t SportWitness), Sporting CP are ready to offer him a pay rise and it remains to be seen whether the player commits his long-term future to them. The report states that the winger dreams of a return to the Premier League.
It remains to be seen whether he’s ready to join his former club in the coming months. Apparently, Tottenham have a 25% sell-on percentage over Edwards’s future transfer and therefore it would be a cheaper acquisition for them compared to other clubs. Apparently, Chelsea are keeping tabs on the 24-year-old winger as well.
Therefore, Chelsea would have to pay €80 million to sign the winger if he signed his new contract with the new release clause. However, Tottenham will still be able to sign him for €60 million because of the sell-on clause included in his deal.
Spurs could certainly use a goalscoring winger and Edwards will be determined to prove himself in the Premier League if he returns to his club. It remains to be seen how the situation develops. Edwards had 12 goals and 14 assists to his name last season and he will help Spurs improve going forward.
