Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has now revealed that he is working hard to avoid persistent hamstring injury problems.
Ange Postecoglou was keen on reinforcing Tottenham’s backline upon his arrival at the club and Micky van de Ven was one of his first signings. The North London club forked out €40 million to sign the Dutch international during the summer of 2023. He quickly established himself as one of the mainstays at the club and has been a constant feature at the back when fit.
While Van de Ven has become a key figure at Spurs, he has struggled with a hamstring issue during his time at the club. He first picked up a hamstring injury back in the 2021/22 season at Wolfsburg before it recurred last season. The 23-year-old was sidelined for 56 days in the initial phase of the season. It saw him miss a total of 12 matches before he was sidelined for another four games in March (18 days).
The Dutch centre-back recently gave an interview to Via Play and he talked about his hamstring problem.
He said: “Your body gets used to it (Premier League intensity) But of course you still have to find the right balance.
“So of course, what’s best for your body and your recovery, those are really important things. So of course you have to find your balance. But as you say, the more games you play, the more you will find your balance in that.
“I think my hamstring is something with my explosiveness that I really have to work on. And I’m definitely still working on that every day.
“So, it’s important that I don’t get another hamstring injury. Because my biggest issues were two injuries, and those were both hamstrings. Those are points of attention for me.
“(I do) very targeted exercises. Yes, keep training on those hamstrings. Of course, around it is also very important. But I still train specifically on those hamstrings.”
While Tottenham have had a mixed start to the new season, Van de Ven has put in some impressive performances so far. If Ange Postecoglou’s team are to end their trophy drought this season, the Dutch centre-back will have to ensure he stays fit for the majority of the season.
Van de Ven is well aware of the fact that the hamstring issues could cause serious problems for him in the long run. He has admitted that he is undergoing continued work to ensure it doesn’t trouble him again. The 23-year-old is doing specific training to avoid any hamstring problems going forward.
