Ben Davies has revealed that he felt Tottenham’s trophy drought would end during Ange Postecoglou’s first year at the club.
The North London club had an exceptional start to the 2023/24 season, they were right at the top of the Premier League table competing with the very best teams in the initial months of Ange Postecoglou’s reign. However, things slowly went downhill because of a lack of depth in their squad and injuries at the back.
Despite being in contention for a top-four finish all season long, they could only secure Europa League football and went trophy-less yet again. The former Celtic manager’s first season at Tottenham is still considered a success. But, Ben Davies feels that his expectations haven’t been met.
While talking to The Business of Sport, the 31-year-old said: “I really thought that this year was our time, but football is an incredibly challenging industry to win. Just spending the biggest money doesn’t guarantee you the results. It’s about building that team and getting it right. It’s probably the hardest thing to do in sport.”
Davies has been a part of the Spurs first-team since joining them from Swansea in 2014. The full-back made the switch after winning the League Cup but he hasn’t added another silverware to his tally in the last ten years.
The Welsh international is well aware of the fact that they will always be questioned for not winning a trophy. While everyone at Tottenham desperately wants to get their hands on silverware, they haven’t been able to make it happen despite their efforts.
Davies felt the 2023/24 season was their opportunity to finally clinch a trophy. Ange Postecoglou who took charge last summer made an incredible start to life in London but the season did not pan out as expected.
With that said, the 31-year-old feels the Spurs have the foundations in place with a new stadium, a top manager and some quality players. Davies believes Tottenham could end their trophy drought in the next couple of years.
