Tottenham players issue joint statement ahead of the match against Manchester United

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham players have announced that they will reimburse the supporters who traveled to Newcastle in their 6-1 defeat at St. James Park on Sunday.

They also apologised to the fans for their poor performance that saw them go 3-0 down inside 10 minutes and 5-0 down inside 20 minutes.

The match was considered a crucial one in their bid to finish top 4 but the humiliating defeat put a big dent on any such chances.

The players have today come out and issues a joint statement apologising to the fans and also announced to reimburse all those who had traveled to witness the thrashing.

The statement issued read:

“As a squad, we understand your frustration, your anger.”

“It wasn’t good enough. We know words aren’t enough in situations like this but believe us, a defeat like this hurts. We appreciate your supports, home and away, and with this in mind we would like to reimburse fans with the cost of their match tickets from St James’ Park.

“We know this does not change what happened on Sunday and we will give everything to put things right against Manchester United on Thursday evening when, again, your support will mean everything to us. Together – and only together – can we move things forward.”

Interim manager Cristian Stellini has since then been sacked and Ryan Mason is now set to take charge of the remaining 6 games.

Daniel Levy called the defeat “unacceptable” in a statement following the sacking. He said:

“Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable. It was devastating to see. We can look at many reasons why it happened and whilst myself, the board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine.

“Cristian will leave his current role along with his coaching staff. Cristian stepped in at a difficult point in our season and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff have conducted themselves during such a challenging time. We wish him and his staff well.

“Ryan Mason will take over head coach duties with immediate effect. Ryan knows the club and the players well. We shall update further on his coaching staff in due course.”

Their next game is against Manchester United, which is another crucial game for them. They are currently 6 points behind 4th place United who have two games in hand.

A win would be a great way to respond after Sunday’s disappointment. It will also mathematically keep them in the race to finish top 4 even though the chances of achieving that remains slim.
