Tottenham on the verge of signing 27-year-old after Mathys Tel rejection; €30m bid submitted, deal in final stages

Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of completing a major defensive signing, with AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori set to join the North London club before the January transfer window closes.

The move has gained widespread attention, with Sky Sports corroborating Gianluca Di Marzio’s report on Tottenham making a €30m bid for the English centre-back. Tomori, who remains under contract with AC Milan until 2027.

Respected Italian journalist Daniele Longo has provided a fresh update on the transfer, stating that the deal is at its final stages.

Taking to X, Longo said:

“Tomori to Spurs at the final stages: 30 million euros, including bonuses!”

The 27-year-old defender came through Chelsea’s famed academy, starring in youth teams that won back-to-back UEFA Youth League and FA Youth Cup titles.

After loan spells at Brighton, Hull City, and Derby County—where he was named Player of the Year—Tomori broke into Chelsea’s senior squad during the 2019-20 season.

His career took a major leap when he joined AC Milan on loan in January 2021, impressing enough to earn a permanent move that summer. He played a crucial role in Milan’s 2021-22 Serie A title-winning campaign, forming a rock-solid defensive partnership with Pierre Kalulu.

His performances earned him a spot in the Serie A Team of the Year and regular starts in Milan’s Champions League campaigns.

This season, Tomori has made 21 appearances across all competitions, starting nine Serie A matches. Known for his pace, tactical awareness, and ball-playing ability, he would add much-needed depth and experience to Ange Postecoglou’s defence.

With Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven sidelined due to injuries earlier this season, Spurs had to rely on Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray as a makeshift centre-back pairing. The addition of Tomori would provide instant reinforcement while also being a long-term asset for the club.

It will also not be surprising if the club are making the investment in a player like Tomori as a replacement for Cristian Romero who has been linked with a move away at the end of the season.

If Tottenham successfully seal the deal, it would mark one of the club’s most significant January transfers, reinforcing their defensive line as they push for a top-four finish and potential silverware.

The bid for the former Chelsea man comes almost immediately after Fabrizio Romano reproted that Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel has rejected a move to Tottenham despite agreement between clubs.

With the transfer window ticking down, Spurs fans will be eagerly awaiting the official announcement of Tomori’s return to the Premier League—this time, in Lilywhite.
