Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall has drawn comparisons to Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.
Lucas Bergvall has been the talk of the town since completing his move from Djurgården to Tottenham in the summer. He has impressed one and all with his performances for Spurs in the pre-season as well as the initial phase of the Premier League. He was a part of the Swedish squad for the September international break. While the teenager only got a limited amount of minutes, he managed to earn plaudits from former Italian defender Marco Palma.
When asked about five young players who impressed him during the international break, Palma said while speaking on Tuttomercatoweb: “Then there is the 2006 Lucas Bergvall, Swedish central attacking midfielder, 187cm, of Tottenham.
“For many the most gifted 2006 in the European panorama, in Sweden, he arrived in the first team at 16 years old. Great ability to play the ball, high-level vision of the game, elegance on the pitch, gifted with excellent technique and enormous versatility.
“In July 2024 he was bought by Tottenham who paid 10 million for him and immediately included him in the first team.
“Senior national team he entered in both matches played by Sweden demonstrating great mastery on the pitch. Reminiscent of Frankie De Jong but more offensive.”
Tottenham managed to beat Barcelona in the race for the services of Bergvall. They paid €10 million to get their hands on the Swedish teenager sensation who has been slotted into Ange Postecoglou’s first team from the start. While he is yet to make his first start for Spurs, the teenager has featured in all three of their league games.
Apart from his work at the North London club, he has also managed to secure his spot in the Swedish national team. After making his debut earlier in the year, he was called up for the initial Nations League fixtures. While Bergvall was on the pitch for just 49 minutes, he still managed to impress Palma, who likened the teenager’s style of play to Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.
The 18-year-old midfielder is a touch more attacking in nature when compared to the Barcelona superstar but he has similar mastery on the ball and his ability to break through the press is what makes him so special. Apart from his ball-playing ability and excellent technique, he has great vision and his versatility makes him stand out.
