Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been handed a four-match ban from international football.

The ban followed after Bentancur’s involvement in a post-match altercation during Uruguay’s Copa America semifinal against Colombia earlier this summer.

According to a report from The Sun, the incident unfolded after Uruguay’s 1-0 defeat to Colombia.

The altercation reportedly started when several Uruguayan players confronted Colombian fans who were allegedly targeting the section of the stadium where the players’ families were seated.

The Uruguayan players rush to protect their family members and in the midst of chaos, Bentancur is said to have thrown a glass bottle, which unintentionally struck a fellow Uruguayan supporter.

Bentancur is not the only one facing disciplinary action. Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez received a five-match ban for entering the crowd to protect his loved ones.

Additionally, Mathias Olivera, Ronaldo Araujo, and Jose Gimenez were each handed three-match suspensions.

Fortunately for Tottenham, Bentancur’s ban is limited to international fixtures, meaning his availability for club matches remains intact.

This comes as a relief for manager Ange Postecoglou, given Bentancur’s importance to Spurs’ midfield.
