Tottenham are plotting to hold contract renewal talks with Cristian Romero amidst interest from Real Madrid.
While Cristian Romero still has close to three years left on his deal at the North London club, his future has become a big talking point in recent months. The Argentine World Cup winner has been linked with a move away but according to a report from Football Insider, Tottenham are looking to hold contract renewal talks with the former Atalanta star in hopes of keeping him at the club for years to come.
Romero arrived at the club in the summer of 2021 on an initial loan deal from the Italian outfit. The move was made permanent in the following summer and he hasn’t looked back since making the move to England. Not only has he established himself as one of the mainstays at Spurs, but the 26-year-old has also helped Argentina win major silverware in recent years.
The South American defender’s work hasn’t gone unnoticed and it has resulted in interest from European giants Real Madrid. Los Blancos want to reinforce their backline and they have identified Romero as a top target. Multiple reports suggest Carlo Ancelotti’s team have been monitoring him but Tottenham do not seem to have any intentions of losing out on their star man.
The North London club want to tie him down to a new deal with better terms. They will sit down with their defensive mainstay next summer to discuss a new contract as they look to fend off the interest from the Spanish giants.
