Spurs wanted versatile 26-year-old from Premier League rivals in January; Klopp loves him

Tottenham wasted no time bolstering their defensive ranks at the start of the January transfer window by securing the signing of Genoa center-back Radu Dragusin.

The move came as a necessity for Spurs, who faced a defensive crisis due to injuries to key defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. Manager Ange Postecoglou even resorted to deploying full-backs Ben Davies and Emerson in central defence.

A new defender was a necessity for Spurs going into the transfer window and they signed the Romanian, in a deal worth €25 million, with an additional €5 million in add-ons, thus making him the most expensive Romanian footballer.

However, a report from Daily Mail revealed that Spurs also enquired with fellow Premier League rivals, Liverpool, about the availability of their defender Joe Gomez.

While discussions with Liverpool didn’t progress further, Gomez has become an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s side this season due to their own injury problems.

Despite his natural position as a center-back, Gomez has showcased his versatility by featuring in various roles across the pitch including, left-back, right-back, and defensive midfielder.

In addition to his impressive passing ability, Gomez excels in aerial duels, ranking second in the entire Premier League with a 76.3% success rate in winning aerial battles, as per Fbref.

His recent performances have attracted huge praise from fans as well as their manager, with Klopp gushing over how ‘wonderful’ he has been, labelling him as ‘super important’ for the team.

Tottenham must be eyeing Liverpool’s longest-serving player with interest, considering Gomez’s extensive Premier League experience, having amassed 131 appearances, as well as his versatility.

However, whether Liverpool will entertain any interest from him in the summer remains to be seen considering how crucial he has proved himself to be for the club.

With Klopp set to leave at the end of the season, the landscape could change, adding further intrigue to Gomez’s future at Anfield.

However, whether Liverpool will entertain offers for Gomez in the summer remains uncertain, given his importance to the squad.
