Tottenham are racing against time to sign Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, as his release clause is set to significantly increase next month.
Spurs signed Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli last summer to be their new number one. While he has done a decent job in goal for the North London club, certain weaknesses in his game have been highlighted on quite a few occasions. As a result, Tottenham are looking to further strengthen the position ahead of next season.
According to Mundo Deportivo via SportWitness, Spurs are keen on signing Joan Garcia and they are well-positioned to win the race for his services. The 23-year-old Spanish goalkeeper could come in and compete with Vicario for a place in the starting XI.
Garcia who was promoted to Espanyol’s first team back in 2021 got an extended run in their team in the second half of last season. He was involved in 21 matches and managed to keep a clean sheet in 12 of those fixtures and only conceded 10 goals. He played a big part in them securing promotion to the Spanish top flight.
His performances have put him on the wishlist of some of the biggest clubs. With four years still left on his contract, the only way to sign him is by triggering his release clause worth €25 million. Tottenham might be one of the strong suitors but they need to hurry to get it over the line as the Spanish goalkeeper’s release clause could rise to €35 million in a month.
The clause will go up to €30 million from August 15th and it can further rise to €35 million if he does get called up to the Spanish team for the September international break. Luis de La Fuente is expected to announce the team in August and with Unai Simon out injured, there are high chances of Garcia getting called up which will further increase his exit clause. Tottenham will have to hurry if they do not want Espanyol’s asking price and the player’s release clause to go up.
