Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for the RB Leipzig defender Mohamed Simakan.
According to a report from BILD, Tottenham are ‘interested’ in signing the 24-year-old central defender and they will face competition from Premier League rivals Newcastle United.
The 24-year-old defender is capable of operating as a central defender as well as a right-back. His versatility will be an added bonus for Tottenham if they can get the deal done. He will help them tighten up at the back and his arrival would add some much-needed depth to the backline as well.
Spurs have signed Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin over the past year but they need another reliable defender at their disposal. They have looked vulnerable defensively in recent weeks. Also, they will compete in the Europa League next season and the likes of Cristian Romero and Van de Ven will have to be rotated often in order to deal with the increased number of games.
Simakan could start alongside Dragusin during rotation. The 24-year-old has shown his quality in the Bundesliga and he will look to make his mark in English football now.
The defender has a €70 million release clause in his contract and it will be interesting to see if the Bundesliga outfit are prepared to sell him for more reasonable price. It is highly unlikely that any club would be willing to trigger his exit clause in the summer. While there is no doubt that he is a quality defender, he has done nothing to justify the €70 million price tag.
Spurs will be hoping to push for trophies next season and they will want to secure Champions League qualification as well. They will need quality signings like Simakan in order to do well.
