Tottenham eyeing up a move for 25-year-old winger this summer for two reasons

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in re-signing their academy graduate Marcus Edwards in the upcoming transfer window.

Despite extending the stay of Timo Werner by another year, Tottenham are still on the lookout for another winger to further bolster their attack ahead of next season.

According to a report from Football.London, the North London club are considering bringing Marcus Edwards back to the club.
The English winger who came up the ranks at Tottenham failed to break into their senior team and he ended up leaving the club back in 2019. When Spurs sold him to Vitoria, they did so with a 50% sell-on clause.

Edwards joined Sporting CP in the winter of 2022. Rather than cashing in on the sell-on clause, Vitoria decided to transfer it to the Portuguese giants. When Spurs signed Pedro Porro from the Lisbon-based club on a permanent deal last summer, they ended up dropping the sell-on clause in Edwards’ contract down to 35% as a part of the deal.

While Sporting are in no rush to negotiate his departure given his importance to the team under Ruben Amorim, Spurs are keen on having him in their ranks for two reasons.

He will be a cost-effective option for the North London club to further bolster their attack and they will also be able to deal with the homegrown quota situation by signing him.

Edwards is valued at around £15 million, with Spurs’ 35% sell-on cut it will go down to around £9.75 million. More importantly, they will get a top-quality homegrown star for a bargain price.

In European football, eight out of the 25 players in a club’s squad should be locally trained players. With the future of quite a few homegrown players uncertain (Oliver Skipp, Troy Parrott and Japhet Tanganga to name a few), Spurs are looking for ways to ensure they have the necessary numbers to compete in the Europa League.
