Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for the Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret.
According to journalist Ciro Venerato (h/t SportWitness), Tottenham are interested in signing the 25-year-old goalkeeper at the end of the season.
He said: “Meret’s future? There is no news. Meeting with the agent, Pastorello, at the end of the season, so we will understand if there will be a need to renew or go elsewhere,” Venerato said.
“Tottenham are interested in the boy, a club that has also contacted the boy’s entourage in this market.”
Meret has been a key player for Napoli this season and he has helped them in their title push so far. The goalkeeper has a contract with the Italian club until the summer of 2024 and it will be interesting to see if Napoli can tie him down to a new contract.
Meanwhile, Tottenham are hoping to replace club legend Hugo Lloris at the end of the season.
The 36-year-old goalkeeper is clearly past his peak and his costly errors this season have dented Tottenham’s hopes of securing Champions League qualification.
It is clear that Tottenham will need to replace him as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper if they want to challenge for the major trophies and Meret could prove to be an upgrade on the French international.
Lloris has a contract at Tottenham until the summer of 2024 as well and he could still be a useful player for the Premier League club. However, Conte must look to bring in a new starter now.
The Londoners could use Lloris’s experience and leadership qualities.
It will be interesting to see if they can convince Meret to join the club at the end of the season. The 25-year-old Napoli star could be tempted to move to the Premier League and the Londoners might be able to offer him a more lucrative financial package compared to Napoli given the difference in resources between both clubs.
Meret is entering his peak years and he could sort out Tottenham’s goalkeeping situation for the foreseeable future.
