Tottenham Hotspur were keen on appointing Vincent Kompany as their manager before opting for Ange Postecoglou.
The North London club were in contention for a place in the Champions League for the majority of the season. While they might have missed out on a spot in the UCL, it can be considered a reasonably good first season for Postecoglou.
Spurs will compete in the Europa League next season. More importantly, the Australian manager has got them playing an attacking and attractive brand of football.
Postecoglou is now focused on taking the next step at Tottenham. But, before Spurs began this journey with the former Celtic boss they were keen on appointing Vincent Kompany as their manager as revealed by his father Pierre Kompany to La Dernière Heure.
The former Manchester City skipper will be seen on the Bayern Munich bench following his appointment as their new boss.
While talking about his son’s move to the German giants, Kompany’s father revealed (h/t SportWitness): “It was a surprise to the whole world. Well, not for me. If you look at which teams have already come knocking: last year you had Tottenham and Chelsea, now Brighton showed interest, and Chelsea again.
“But when Bayern, a club that is so well structured at all levels, comes knocking, you don’t refuse.”
Kompany will look to steady the ship following a disappointing campaign under Thomas Tuchel where they ended up missing out on the Bundesliga title for the first time in years.
The Belgian manager was relegated with Burnley in the 2023/24 season, despite that Bayern have appointed him as their next boss and this hasn’t surprised his father.
On the back of his promotion-winning campaign with Burnley in the 2022/23 season, Tottenham were one of the clubs who wanted to appoint him as their new boss. The North London club were quite impressed with the work that he had done in his short managerial career. However, things didn’t work out as expected and they ended up appointing Postecoglou in the end.
Similarly, big clubs like Chelsea were keen on the Belgian manager as well. It shows that he is highly rated within the game and therefore the interest from Bayern Munich is unsurprising.
