Tottenham are reportedly ready to make two crucial decisions in the upcoming January transfer window, focusing on experienced defender Ben Davies and on-loan forward Timo Werner, as reported by Football London.
Ben Davies, the club’s longest-serving player, is likely to have his contract extended. The Welshman, currently in the final year of his deal, has a one-year extension clause that Spurs are expected to activate.
Spurs to offer Ben Davies a new deal
Davies recently proved his worth during Tottenham’s commanding 4-0 victory over Manchester City last month. With first-choice centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven sidelined, the 31-year-old stepped up, using his composure and experience to neutralize City’s potent attack.
Since his arrival from Swansea City in 2014, Davies has made 340 appearances for Spurs, solidifying himself as a dependable and versatile option in the squad. Ange Postecoglou values his leadership and adaptability, making him a key component in the club’s setup.
Tottenham also keen on signing Werner on a permanent deal
The report also states that Tottenham are keen on securing Timo Werner, currently on loan from RB Leipzig, on a permanent deal. Werner’s initial six-month loan in January was extended for another season this summer, with an £8.5 million option to buy included in the deal.
The German forward has delivered moments of quality, including a goal in a 2-1 League Cup win over Manchester City and an assist in an emphatic 4-0 league win, also against Pep Guardiola’s side. He also assisted Brennan Johnson’s opener against Fulham on Sunday.
However, his overall contribution has been inconsistent, recording just one goal and three assists in 16 appearances across all competitions this season.
There have been contradicting reports regarding Werner, with some reports claiming that the club do not want to sign him on a long-term deal, while the more recent reports suggest that the club are now considering signing him on a permanent deal.
Given the fee he is available for, the decision to sign him on a permanent deal to bolster their squad depth will make more sense.
The report adds that plans for the January window are already put into place with manager Ange Postecoglou and technical director Johan Lange holding several meetings.
If Tottenham move forward with these plans, it would reflect a balanced approach to squad management, addressing immediate needs while laying the groundwork for future success under Postecoglou’s leadership.
