Tony Cascarino ‘can’t believe’ 27-year-old ‘joined Tottenham’

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur signed Clement Lenglet from Barcelona at the start of the season.

The North London giants needed to add more depth at the back and they decided to sign the 27-year-old on loan.

Lenglet is expected to return to his parent club at the end of the season, after what has been a mixed campaign for him.

While the 27-year-old has done well in a few matches, he has been largely underwhelming overall.

Tony Cascarino has now questioned Tottenham’s decision to sign the 27-year-old defender. He feels that Lenglet was quite poor at Barcelona and Tottenham should not have signed him.

“You have the Harry Kane scenario and it’s a toxic football club at the moment. Fans had a go at Davinson Sanchez last week, but it was all about the football club. Against Newcastle they named four centre-halves on the bench, they knew they’d have a problem. Tanganga was on the bench, Davies was on the bench, Lenglet, I saw him at Barcelona, I couldn’t believe that he even joined Tottenham, I can’t believe they took him,” Cascarino said on The Game football podcast.

The North London giants should have gone for someone with more quality.

Cristian Romero is the only reliable defender at the club now, and Tottenham will have to bring in quality reinforcements at the end of the season.

Spurs were recently dealt a crushing defeat against Newcastle United and the performance has exposed their vulnerabilities at the back.

The likes of Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez have been heavily criticised for their performances this season as well.

It remains to be seen whether Tottenham can plug these gaps during the summer transfer window and get back to challenging for trophies.

The defeat to Newcastle resulted in the departure of Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason has now been put in short on an interim basis until the end of the season.

It will be interesting to see who comes in as the permanent replacement for Antonio Conte at the end of the season.
