‘This is where Daniel Levy intervened’: Journalist explains how Spurs chief won £26m transfer chase

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur signed Radu Dragusin from Genoa at the start of this month.

The 21-year-old Romanian defender completed a £26 million move to the North London club and Journalist Calin Mates has now revealed how Daniel Levy helped his side win the race for Dragusin’s signature.

German champions Bayern Munich were keen on signing the defender as well but Tottenham offered him a longer contract with more money to convince the player to move to the Premier League.

Mates revealed to Digispor: “We have learned that Tottenham have slightly increased their bid in the context of Bayern Munich’s offer. They said: ‘OK, if he shows loyalty, if he shows that he keeps his word to come we will reward him’. This is where Daniel Levy intervened, he gave him a six-year contract. This contract means: ‘I give you more money, but you also give me an extra year’. That means somewhere around €3m for Dragusin’s contract.”

Tottenham were in desperate need of defensive reinforcements and Dragusin should prove to be a quality long-term acquisition. He has shown his quality in the Italian league and he has the physical and technical attributes to do well in English football as well.

The defender signed a six-year contract with the North London club and Tottenham will be hoping that he can fulfil his tremendous potential with them in the coming seasons.

The defender will be hoping to establish himself as a regular starter for Tottenham in the coming weeks now. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are ahead of him in the pecking order right now and it will be interesting to see if Ange Postecoglou is willing to switch to a back three in order to accommodate the Romanian in his starting lineup.

With quality wing backs like Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie at their disposal, Tottenham certainly have the tools to execute a back three formation effectively.

Meanwhile, Levy has often been criticised for his way of handling transfers but the Tottenham chief certainly deserves a lot of credit for beating the Bundesliga giants in the race to sign the talented young defender.
