“They call him starboy”: Alasdair Gold unveils the player who has earned ‘starboy’ status at the club

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur expert Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham players have started referring Pape Matar Sarr as “starboy”.

The 21-year-old has bursted on to the scene this season. Ange Postecoglou put his trust in the young midfielder and he has repaid it by putting in top performances consistently every game.

He has skipped ahead of Oliver Skipp, another young midfielder who started the first game for Spurs but has been replaced by Sarr since then.

He has formed a formidable partnership with Yves Bissouma and James Maddison in the midfield and the trio has very quickly become one of Premier League’s top midfields.

And while his performances may have been overshadowed in general, Gold has revealed that people around Spurs fully recognise it.

Infact, he has revealed that the Tottenham players call him “starboy” in training.

Speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast, he said:

“Pape Matar Sarr was terrific against AC Milan. Antonio Conte went, well thank you for that, go and stand over there, and that was literally what he did.

“Whereas, [Ange] Postecoglou’s gone, no no, this kid’s going to be just a world-beater.

“Like I say, around the club they call him ‘Starboy’, that’s what the players call him because they believe he’s just going to be this phenomenal young player.

“I’m very excited about the way Postecoglou’s going with this team.”

He has been immense no doubt and has clearly got a big future ahead of him.

However it is interesting to see what happens when Rodrigo Bentancur returns to the team from his injury.

Before his injury he was the best midfielder at Spurs and perhaps the best player for them as well.

He popped up with big performances and crucial goals last season right until his unfortunate injury.

But the way these three are performing, he might have to fight his way back into the first team
