PGMOL have released the audio of the discussions between the officials behind the scenes from the Cristian Romero red card incident.
Chelsea won the game 4-1 against a 9 men Tottenham side in a game that saw 2 red cards, multiple VAR reviews and numerous disallowed goals.
Spurs took an early lead but the game changed when the Romero was sent off for what looked like a rash tackle on Enzo. Even though he got the ball, he caught the Chelsea midfielder on the shins during the follow through.
Referee Michael Oliver was sent to the pitch-side monitor to review the incident before confirming a straight red card for Romero and a subsequent penalty for Chelsea which was converted by Cole Palmer.
The following video shows the entire process from the incident to the decision along with the audio of the officials involved as they reviewed it.
At first glance, it looked like a clean tackle and one of the officials could be heard saying (0:51): “That looks like a great tackle”
Upon review other angles of the incident in slow motion it was then eventually decided that it was reckless and a red-card worthy challenge from Romero.
