Sanity at last? Van der Vaart names his “perfect fit” next full time coach at Spurs

Amid all the speculation about whether Tottenham will be staying up next season, the question of who will be Spurs’ next permanent coach has remained constant. Naturally, many names have been mentioned, and most have quite frankly lacked much imagination.

One front-runner among fans, anyway, has been Mauricio Pochettino. Whilst there was a lot of affection for the Argentine, last time around, the cold reality is that he would have the players we have now, and not Harry Kane and Co. As the phrase. goes, one’s ex is an ex for a reason, and one has to ask if his “house with no furniture” metaphor likely refers to Mauricio Pochettino’s about Tottenham Hotspur.

He repeatedly compared the club (especially after moving to their new stadium) to “an amazing house, but you need to put in the furniture”, meaning great infrastructure/facilities but lacking top-quality players (“furniture”) to succeed fully.

This quote from around 2019 has been widely referenced in football discussions, even years later.

Rafael told Mail Online:

“Mauricio Pochettino was fantastic at Tottenham, but I’m not truly a fan of bringing old managers back. As a player, I was always a fan of Scott Parker. As a coach, I believe in him, and I think that he would be a perfect fit for Spurs.

A lot of people will laugh at me saying this, but I know Scott, and I know that the players would love him, run extra for him and train like hell. Scott Parker would be a perfect fit, but it is a risk. Any manager you bring in now will be a risk.”

Spurs are in a dire situation, sitting 16th in the Premier League table, just five points above the relegation zone. We recently sacked manager Thomas Frank and appointed Igor Tudor as interim head coach until the end of the season to try to avoid relegation. Tudor, a Croatian with no prior Premier League experience, gave his first interview recently, acknowledging the “unacceptable” position and the big challenge ahead.

Parker is currently the head coach of Burnley in the Premier League, a role he has held since July 2024. He successfully guided them to promotion back to the top flight in his first season (2024-25), but recent reports indicate he’s under significant pressure at Burnley following a shock FA Cup defeat to League One side Mansfield Town, with speculation about a potential sacking and the club already eyeing experienced Championship replacements.

Sanity, perhaps, but would it come easily to Tottenham?
