‘Spurs have made a mistake’ – Former star gives his verdict on transfer decision

By Saikat -

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Marcus Edwards was allowed to leave the club back in 2019 after he failed to cement his place in their first team plans.

The 23 year old has now gone on to establish himself as a key player for Sporting and he produced a superb performance against the Londoners in the Champions League earlier this week.

As per former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson, Tottenham have made a mistake in letting the player leave and they might regret their decision in the long run.

Edwards left the club in search of regular football and he joined Vitoria Guimaraes in 2019. The player excelled in Portugal and he was snapped up by Sporting.

So far he has scored three goals in six appearances for his new club this season and he will be looking to add to his tally in the coming months.

Edwards can operate as a winger as well as a central attacking midfielder and Spurs could certainly use someone like him right now. They are missing a creative presence in the middle of the park and the 23 year old could have been a useful player for Antonio Conte.

In fact, Spurs tried to bring in a creative midfielder during the summer transfer window as well. They were linked with Nicolo Zaniolo and Christian Eriksen.

Robinson said to Football Insider“He looked very good in that game.

“It is easy to get yourself up for it when you’re playing against a team you previously played for. You feel like you have got something to prove.

“If he continues to do that week in, week out Tottenham may be regretful. But hindsight is a wonderful thing.

“If he plays to that level every week it looks like Spurs have made a mistake. Let’s be honest though, they do not often make mistakes when it comes to letting players go.”

Happens to every club, players develop at different rates, due to age, physical development, personal circumstances, lack of game time, managers don’t fancy them.

Jury is still out on Marcus, good luck to him.

I am glad I am not the only person who thought this.As I understand it he was sold because of his attitude as other clubs found out.It looks like he may finally have grown up,but we don’t need him.

He had one good dribble in the first half but couldn’t finish and was anonymous for most of the 2nd half. His performance has has been greatly exaggerated.

It’s all to do with their age, stage of their career and development as a person. Edwards needed to play competitively to become a fully fledged footballer and a grown up, outside of his childhood club. I guarantee that he would never have made this progress without the hard slog of building a career in the Portuguese second tier. The style and tempo of Portugal without the pressure to be ‘Messi’ has allowed him to flourish.

We probably shouldn’t have let him go but who knows what the situation was with Hitchen still knocking about with Levy. too busy not finding out if Wobblybelly was a wrongun or not? Good luck to Edwards, he’s earned his stripes and grown up. Great to see…

Perhaps our esteemed chairman might like to right that wrong and re-sign him? No chance, unless he can put his foot on Sporting’s windpipe in any deal. Like he tried with Grealish! 😂

You dint have potential ‘ Messi’s ‘ turning up every decade. If Edwards was touted a potential future Messi at 18 years old, its was a Bad mistake to let him go. Shud hv sent him on loan, to give him games n to strengthem him, like Dane Scarlett. Big mistake.

We’ve spent £10m on Clarke and £22m on Gil trying to replace him 🤔
