Tottenham expert names player who is ‘attracting some attention’; scouts are blown away by him

By Mehdi Gokal -

Young Tottenham loanee, Ashley Phillips, has been making a solid impression at his new club.

The teenage centre-back made a move to the Championship side Plymouth Argyle on a loan agreement last month, securing his presence at the club for the remainder of the season.

Phillips seamlessly integrated into Plymouth’s starting line-up, featuring in eight matches across both the English second tier and the FA Cup since his arrival.

Spurs’ expert John Wenham has lauded the defender for his exceptional start at Plymouth Argyle, expressing his admiration for Phillips’s performances, which are beginning to ‘attract some attention‘.

In a conversation with Tottenham News, Wenham drew parallels between Phillips and Chelsea’s rising star defender Levi Colwill, noting how both players have flourished during their respective loan spells.

He said:

“Phillips is getting rave reviews week in and week out. He has got all the attributes to be a top centre-back, and he is already demonstrating that in the Championship.

“People in scouting roles who have been watching him play are praising him to the moon, so I am really pleased about that.

“I think the next step for Phillips is a Premier League loan next season because he has developed far quicker than I thought he would.

“We could be looking at our very own Levi Colwill, where we have a young defender out on loan excelling in the Premier League.”

Spurs secured Ashley Phillips’ services in the summer, signing him on a five-year contract after signing him from Blackburn for just £2 million.

The 18-year-old came close to first-team football earlier in the season after the injuries to Romero and Micky van de Ven. Ange was reportedly going to give him an opportunity but the youngster unfortunately picked up an injury of his own.

TBH Says:

Phillips certainly appears to be a promising defender in the making, given his performances at such a young age.

He will most likely be sent on loan to another Premier League side as part of his development next season before he is integrated into the Tottenham team.
