‘something happened behind the scenes’: Former star reacts to Spurs player’s ‘strange’ situation

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence was on loan at Leeds United during the first half of the season.

The championship outfit decided to send him back to his parent club in January and he has now joined Genoa on loan for the second half of the campaign as a part of the Radu Dragusin transfer.

Former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton has now revealed that it was a strange situation involving the 24-year-old full-back and things might have happened behind the scenes that led to his return from Leeds.

Hutton stated that Spence has shown his quality in the past with Nottingham Forest and he was expected to impress when he joined Tottenham.

“I feel it’s a strange one,” he told Football Insider.

“I really liked him at Nottingham Forest and then Tottenham came in for him with the big money.

“I was really looking forward to seeing what he was capable of and I thought he might have had a chance under Ange Postecoglou.

“But reading the comments from Daniel Farke, you’re thinking that something happened behind the scenes.

“Is he not working hard enough? Is he not focused?

“What I see on the pitch when I see him play is a guy who wants to learn.

“He’s got all the attributes to be a modern-day full-back, so it’s a shame to see this happen.

“Hopefully he can get his head down with his new loan move and just go and show people what he’s capable of.”

It will be interesting to see if the right back can get his career back on track with regular football in Italy.

There is no doubt that he is a quality full back with immense potential. He will probably need to work on his professionalism and discipline in order to fulfil his tremendous potential.

If he manages to impress in Italy during the second half of the campaign, Spence might still have a future at Tottenham in the coming seasons. Alternatively, the north London club could sell him to a big club in the summer if they cannot accommodate him in their plans.

Either way, Spence is young enough to salvage his career and he will need to make the most of the opportunity at Genoa in the next few months.
