Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has advised Tottenham against appointing Vincent Kompany as their new manager, following the sacking of Antonio Conte.
The Belgian has been linked with the job along with other high-profile managers such as Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique.
Kompany has done an impressive job at Burnley, guiding them to the Premier League in his first full season and transforming them into an attractive attacking side. He also led Burnley to the Championship title this season, their first trophy since 2016.
However, Carragher believes that the Tottenham job could be too early for Kompany, despite his success at Burnley.
He urged caution with the appointment of top players into big jobs and cited the struggles of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in their managerial careers as examples.
Speaking on The Overlap, Carragher said:
“It has to be a building process where you’re improving. There’s talk of Vincent Kompany and whether he could be that man.
He may go on to be a great manager, but it’s far too early for him in terms of talking like this. Look at Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard who are two of the best players we’ve seen in this Premier League era, and Kompany is the same.
I think there’s this rush to get these top players into big jobs. It didn’t go too well for Kompany in Belgium, Burnley has been amazing.
I think we need to be careful with these top players and I think it would be far too early for Vincent Kompany.”
Kompany had a successful playing career as a central defender, but his managerial career is still in its early stages. He struggled during his time as manager of Anderlecht in Belgium before moving to Burnley where he excelled.
Tottenham fans will be hoping for a successful appointment to help the team bounce back from a disappointing season and challenge for a top-four spot next year.
The decision on who will be the new manager will be crucial for the club’s future success.
