“Ruins the counterattack” – Pundit urges Tottenham to upgrade on attacker in harsh criticism

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham have been advised to consider upgrading their current right-winger, Dejan Kulusevski, by talkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Agbonlahor expressed concerns regarding the Swedish international’s performance, suggesting that he hasn’t met expectations since joining the club.

Kulusevski, who arrived at Spurs from Juventus, is under contract until 2028.

Despite attracting interest from other clubs, including Aston Villa, he remains a key figure in Tottenham’s squad.

Last season, Kulusevski contributed eight goals and three assists in 36 Premier League appearances.

His ability to create chances and act as a focal point in the attack has been significant, even if his goal tally was lower than anticipated.

However, Agbonlahor pointed out that Kulusevski was substituted ten times last season, indicating potential areas for improvement.

The former England striker emphasised that Kulusevski’s lack of pace often disrupts Tottenham’s counter-attacks, slowing down the play and giving opponents time to regroup.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor said:

“Tottenham really need to upgrade Kulusevski. I watched him last season.

He got substituted 10 times. He lacks pace. The amount of times I watched Spurs trying to counterattack on that right-hand side, he slows it down, everyone gets back, and it ruins the counterattack.

They need an upgrade on Kulusevski.”

While Agbonlahor’s criticism focuses on Kulusevski’s speed, it is evident that the winger adds quality to the team.

Manager Ange Postecoglou has demonstrated confidence in the 24-year-old forward, preferring him last season and continuing to include him in recent pre-season friendlies.

Tottenham face the task of balancing their squad’s requirements with the individual strengths of their players.

Although there are calls for an upgrade, Kulusevski’s creative skills and experience remain crucial assets.
