Report: 36-year-old manager ‘turned down’ an approach from Tottenham to replace Conte

By Mehdi Gokal -

Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has reportedly turned down an approach from Tottenham Hotspur to become their next manager. The news was shared by TalkSport pundit Alan Brazil, who claimed that the Premier League club approached Kompany weeks ago, but he declined the offer.

This development comes in the wake of Spurs sacking Antonio Conte on Sunday, following his public criticism of the team’s performance and the club’s lack of ambition. Cristian Stellini, the assistant manager, has been appointed as interim manager until the end of the season, with Ryan Mason as his assistant.

Meanwhile, the North London club continues to look for a long-term replacement for Conte, and several high-profile names have been linked with the job, including Mauricio Pochettino, Luis Enrique, Roberto De Zerbi, and Julian Nagelsmann.

Kompany is a relatively new name on this list, having only recently taken over as manager of Burnley, who currently sit at the top of the Championship table with a 13-point lead. Since joining Anderlecht as player-manager in 2019, the Belgian footballer has made a significant impact on the club’s fortunes.

But it seems like the Belgian does not intend to switch jobs so soon in his career. Discussing the report by the Sun, Alan Brazil told TalkSport (3:26-4:26):

“Nevermind, let’s rewind about four weeks ago I told you this live on the radio, he’s turned it down.”

“It was weeks ago, I like Ken, but it was weeks ago that I was told that (he turned it down).”

“You’ve got to be careful jumping jobs quickly. I think he’s doing a brilliant job at Burnley we all know they’re going to be promoted this year into the Premier League and sometimes you can jump ship too too soon.”

“He’s still learning as a manager he’s still learning his trade I know it’s very difficult at times to turn jobs down.”

It is no surprise that the 35-year-old is drawing interest from larger clubs, but it remains to be seen whether he will be open to a move away from Burnley. Brazil’s report suggests that he has already turned down at least one offer, although it is unclear whether he will remain at Burnley for the foreseeable future or consider other opportunities. Tottenham, for their part, will continue to explore their options as they search for their next permanent manager.
