Pundit believes Spurs made a mistake selling one player who would have flourished under Ange Postecoglou

Former Spurs player turned pundit Jamie O’Hara believes Harry Winks would have thrived under Ange Postecoglou.

Harry Winks left last summer to join Leicester City. The midfielder signed a three-year contract with the Championship side for a reported transfer fee of approximately €11.6 million.

Spurs’ academy graduate chose to part ways with the club after being associated with them since the age of 5.

Under Enzo Maresca’s management, Winks has emerged as a key player at his new club, featuring 33 appearances in the English second tier and helping keep Leicester City six points clear at the top of the Championship table.

Acknowledging his impressive performances in the ongoing season, English football manager and radio host Jamie O’Hara opines that the defensive midfielder could have been a valuable asset under Postecoglou’s management had he remained at the club.

Speaking to Grosvenor Sport, O’Hara said (via Spurs Web):

“Harry Winks for me is a top player, I’ve always liked him. He found it hard at Tottenham and I feel like he was pushed away by Antonio Conte because he wasn’t his type of player, but I tell you what, if he was there now with Ange Postecoglou, he’d be playing!

“He’s an Ange type of player – he keeps the ball, he wants to pass forward and he’s got energy in midfield. I actually think he’s a better player than Oliver Skipp, so I would have kept Winks at Tottenham.

“He’s been a brilliant signing for Leicester and he’s shown his quality. He’s probably gone in there and thought, ‘this is a Premier League club, I’ve probably got to suffer for a season in the Championship, but this is my route to starting regularly in the Premier League’.

Winks, a product of the Lilywhites’ youth system, began training with the first team during the 2013–14 season. Impressed by his performances, Mauricio Pochettino signed him after watching videos of his play.

Despite facing injuries in the 2017–18 season, Winks returned strongly the following season, scoring crucial goals and earning a spot in the Champions League Final against Liverpool.

He later signed a new five-year contract but joined Sampdoria on loan for the 2022–23 season before eventually leaving the club.
