Talksport pundit Dean Saunders has hit out at the Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero for his reckless performance against Chelsea.
The 25-year-old Argentine international is often lauded for his aggressive defending but sometimes it can cost his side and that is exactly what happened against the Blues.
Romero was reckless with his challenges and he was eventually sent off. His suspension handed Chelsea a major advantage during the game and allowed the Blues to pick up a comprehensive 4-1 victory away from home.
Saunders believes that Romero has developed into a liability for Tottenham now. The 25-year-old defender has already picked up four red cards since joining the north London club.
“I watched the game the other night as well, first 20 minutes, Spurs were like Real Madrid,” the pundit said on talkSPORT (9/11 9:29am) .
“But [Cristian] Romero, absolute liability. I mean what’s he doing? He tried to get sent off, he eventually did get sent off and they end up with nine men and they played unbelievably.”
There is no doubt that he is one of the best central defenders in the Premier League, but he will need to work on the disciplinary aspects of his game. He cannot afford to leave his side in trouble with his reckless defending from time to time.
It will be interesting to see if Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou urges the defender to curb his aggression in the coming months. In addition to his quality as a defender, Romero is also the vice-captain of the club, and he will have to be more responsible in the coming months.
Tottenham have started the season well and they will be hoping to return to the UEFA Champions League. It remains to be seen whether Romero can help them secure a top-four finish this season.
