PL legend hails ‘genius piece of business’ from Levy, outlines Tottenham ‘dilemma’

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has been linked with a move away from the London club this summer.

The 29-year-old striker is currently in the final year of his contract and he is yet to sign an extension with the club.

Tottenham will not want to do the player on a free transfer next year and they will be left with no choice but to sell him if he does not extend his deal.

Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer has now hailed Daniel Levy’s decision to tie the player down to a six-year contract back in 2018.

Shearer believes that the contract extension allowed Tottenham to fend off clubs like Manchester City in recent seasons. The Premier League champions tried to sign Kane before they signed Erling Haaland.

“Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, has a reputation in the game as a tough negotiator but this summer represents a crossroads,” he said to the Athletic.

“Tying Harry down to a six-year contract in 2018 was a genius piece of business because it gave the club huge protection when City and others came calling, but it presents them with a dilemma now.

“They could sell him for a decent fee or hold their nerve, gamble on him agreeing new terms and risk him leaving for nothing in a year.”

However, Spurs are in a sticky position now and it remains to be seen what the London club decide. It seems that the Londoners are in a dilemma now.

Ideally, they will want the player to sign another new contract with them and continue at the club for the foreseeable future.

The 29-year-old is one of the best strikers in world football and his departure would weaken Tottenham severely.

Tottenham are going through a period of transition and they have brought in a new manager. They will not want to weaken the squad too much and they will need players like Kane in order to get back into the top four and secure Champions League qualification once again.
